Amazon Announces Price Increase for Prime from $79/year to $99/year

papasteves02 1,309 March 13, 2014 at 09:46 AM More Amazon Deals
It looks like the price increase for Amazon Prime was more imminent than the retailer let on. Amazon recently announced [amazon.com] that it will be increasing the fees for Prime to $99/year for general subscriptions and $49/year for Amazon Students. The original fees were $79/year and $39/year respectively.

The price increase doesn't take effect until April 17, 2014 [amazon.com], meaning if you are able to renew your subscription before that date, you can lock in the current rate of $79/year.

We recently asked Slickdealers if they would pay for Prime given any price increases, and an overwhelming 86% of respondents said that they wouldn't renew their subscriptions. Several mentioned that they would consider renewing for a $20 increase but not a $40 increase. Others mentioned that they might consider paying a higher rate if Amazon announced new services and features in conjunction with a price increase.

As of today, no new services or features have been announced along with the price increase.

Thanks to eagle-eyed Slickdealer Mooshe for tipping us off on our hot deals thread.

Now that Amazon has officially raised its price for Prime, will you be renewing?

UPDATE: Slickdealer orick cleverly pointed out the following workaround to locking in the $79 rate even if you're scheduled to renew after the April 17, 2014 date:
  1. Look up your prime expiration date.
  2. Purchase a Prime gift membership here [amazon.com] and have it send to your own email address after your membership is expected to expire.
  3. Place your order.
  4. Turn off your Prime subscription auto-renew.
  5. On or after the date your Prime expires, you should receive an email from Amazon with a year of Prime membership.

This is absurd. raising prime membership without any additional benefits? Its like they thought, hey we are so popular now and can do whatever we want and customers can suck it.
Nope, I'm backing out. I ended my prime membership in Jan2014. my wife's still a student and I asked amazon if I could add her to my account to get student benefits but they simply responded, that is not possible. This doesnt make sense since we are in the same household.
Time to play the game, I'll just open a new amazon account where students get free prime membership for 6months.

$99/12 months = 8.25 per month for 2 day shipping, instant videos and kindle library.

I shop online a lot, and to receive the item in 2 days is a great convenience. Plus with camelcamelcamel, it's a great way to get the lowest price on the item you want.

I hate the increase but for me it's worth it.

The price was at a good level already. They should have a cheaper Prime membership for people who just want the 2-day shipping and none of the other benefits!

an extra $20 a year is nothing for the value i receive from my amazon prime account. 2 day shipping, instant video (tons of content for my kids and a decent amount of stuff i like, plus new series i'm willing to give a shot)... no brainer for me. i use my account a lot for work (own my business) and for personal items. and no tax in illinois. great value, even at $99 a year.

great deal still won't see the price affect for another year since I just renewed.

But if you want things quick and cheap can't go wrong

I don't plan on renewing and I've been a prime member for several years. It's not worth it at $100 a year.

I don't see too much of a problem with them raising the price. If you read the article, they haven't raised that price in 9 YEARS. Amazon isn't a charity, it's a business. And the price of stuff is going to continue to go up. Amazon has to compensate somehow for that rise in price.
If you really like it and really use it, the extra $20 won't be a big deal to you.

I am not happy about the increase, but will most likely renew in Feb. 2015. For what you get, the two day shipping and the instant video, it is still a good deal.

Well they were saying it was going to be more than that but $20 increase is not that bad especially for the 2 day shipping and no taxes.

I placed 82 orders in 2013. All but maybe 5 were shipped via PRIME.
At $79 a year it was a phenomenal deal. At $99 it's still excellent value.

Oh... I'm on a PRIME share.. so it's free for me anyway Stick Out Tongue
I just don't get the instant vids or any of the other perks but that's fine with me.
If my sister drops her PRIME I'll gladly pony up the $99.

Amen to that. People who leave will come right back. They will most likely start spending that extra $20 on shipping costs for small items.
