I had heard that, also. I was trying to figure out the logic, and all I can come up with is that once the shelves are empty, if they stay that way for awhile, customers will change their shopping patterns and the risk is that they go elsewhere permanently. Also, more publicity over empty shelves.
Logic is that the only way you can get the attention of the rich (aka, the board and shareholders) is to hurt their pocketbooks. Quite some interesting things happening; heard MB in Chelmsford shut down completely today (don't know why) and the S&S across the street was a full house with their large parking lot 100% full, a sight only otherwise seen at their grand opening weekend and practically they ended up getting wiped out of a number of things. Hmm, and the pricing around Burlington MA looked to me like they were panicking about the impact of Wegmans opening there in a couple months. Though, I went to TJ's to pick up another few things and they have things under great control. Customer volume is sparse at other MBs except at Fletcher St Lowell one which is relied upon by low income people.
I just came from the Rochester MB. They now have a sign as you walk in the door that says "Boycott MB & shop our competitors". They had just one lane open, and a sign posted stating "we are temporarily out of paper & plastic bags--please bring your own".
I stocked up on powdered buttermilk since this will be my last trip to MB for now & I'm not sure if Hannaford stocks this item. Guess I'll find out on my next trip there.
