Either fly down to LAX or check on craigslist for a ride from a college student going home or to school after the holidays.
Ridesharing info can be found online if you google it. I've driven someone's car to sf from la before and took a flight down. If there's a chance you will not buy the car then maybe renting is a safer bet than flying and then having to purchase a late ticket. Want to look into train ride? Skip the driving.
Try Carrentals.com I just got a quote of $87 for some small car at national rentals. SJC to LAX.
t is a little tricky. Prices can vary considerably by time and dates. No agency in particular has lower one way rates than others. In my experience when traveling from SJ to LA it is cheaper to rent off airport. Some agencies add drop off fees and sometimes they are built in to the rate.
