California Asks Residents To Rat Out Neighbors With Out-Of-State Car Registrations [consumerist.com]

- I didn't know they had such a program. I have family, and a place actually up in OR. I'd gladly purchase a car in OR and register it up there and drive it down here and after awhile register it ![]() The problem with that however is CA screws you when you try to register an out of state car. They want you to pay sales tax on the value of the car. Now, if you paid sales tax out of state then you "only" have to pay the difference between what you paid and what you would have paid if you bought the car in CA, but if you purchased it in OR they'd want the whole amount (as you would have paid $0). Or atleast the last time I looked in to it, that's the way I understood it. Ya know, it's funny but when I was in school I was pulled over in a friends car (he was driving) because the cop "had seen his car for years and noticed he never got CA plates". He instructed him that he had to register his car as he was here for too long but per the article "The two exceptions to that are on duty active military personnel or a student who is paying out of state tuition," explained Officer Wayland. So nice the cops know the laws they're supposed to enforce

Wonder why there is a structural deficit in CA:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1...lenews_wsj "But then something went radically wrong as California legislatures and governors built a welfare state on high tax rates, liberal entitlement benefits, and excessive regulation. The results, though predictable, are nonetheless striking. From the mid-1980s to 2005, California's population grew by 10 million, while Medicaid recipients soared by seven million; tax filers paying income taxes rose by just 150,000; and the prison population swelled by 115,000." Time to stop the war.....on businesses and individual success!
