In lieu of the travel industries dismal outlook, Lastminutetravel.com has just launched it's "The World for a Dollar" promotion.

"Starting in January, you will have 15 minutes, Monday - Friday for 2 weeks to buy any hotel for $1 per night. You won't know which 15 minutes you will be able to put those dollar bills to use, so sign up for our email hints to get ahead of the game."

Figured a thread will help the other SD'ers figure those 15 minutes out!

The countdown clock does not show up on the homepage anymore, point your browser to the hotel page. You will see a picture of a featured destination. Such as 'Cocoa Beach' the sale starts when the price is listed as "from $1." The image is flash, so I am not sure if there is a way to auto detect if it is set to $1. -ClimbGuy[/B]

NOTICE: If you have dial-up, you can NOT participate.

I've contacted lastminutetravel.com, and lastminutetravel.com does not care. I ask that if you think it's unfair, that you contact them at customer_support@lastminutetravel.com and request they make this contest fair by removing the video. If dialup is sufficient for booking on their site, you should be able to participate in their contests. For those privileged folks who keep editing and deleting this notice, a message intended to save people with dial-up time and possibly, through email complaints, take part in this contest like you, I ask that you stop.

Please post your wins here in the wiki of this thread Whee

Since there have been several confusing answers to many of our questions (such as whether we'll owe tax on this, etc), I have saved a copy of the TOS as it is now and has been since last week, in case we need to fall back on it. Some CSRs have said this is a sweeps and we could be sent 1099s, however, the TOS states otherwise. A tax-law professional stated that it won't matter if they change the TOS later to state it is a sweepstakes, what will matter is what the TOS said when we booked. So for those of us that have already booked, we should be okay... still as of 1/31/08. I have attached a copy of the TOS in pdf format here in the Wiki.

UPDATE ** As of 2/3 it seems as though LMT has changed the way in which this promotion is being run. It is truly random now whether you will see the video or not! You can be on at the same time as someone else is but only one of you might get the video. So far reports of videos being shown have been trickling in every 20mins or so with very few people actually being able to secure a booking. In fact many claim they hit "confirm booking" with full minutes left on the clock just to be told contest is over and they were out of time. Seems that maybe they are allowing a set number to see the video and only a handful of that grouping is allowed to book...once the chosen few have booked it ends the session for the others who were trying ***

THE PROMOTION RUNS 24 Hours per day now, Monday-Friday
Ignore the video, this is confirmed Smilie Look for clues on the hotel page as well throughout the day.
Tonight's clue was on a boat for a listing for a Cancun hotel. It clearly said 1:27am EST

4) On Thursday morning, the clock did not appear on the main page. It is important to monitor both the hotel page as well as the search results page too.

KNOWN FACTS:

1- Although it states $1 per day it has been confirmed that you will not be charged. It will be $0 per day.
2- Some hotels that are in search results now magically disappear during the $1 time limit so have a backup hotel just in case.
3- More 5 star hotels/resorts were available during the first day but not all room types were.
4- They are not doing a 15min time block. The first day was split into (2) seperate 7min30sec time blocks. The second day has had (3) 5min clock. The third day had two 7min30sec time blocks starting between 6am and 7am EST. Times are random and video clues are crap. You just have to be on at the right time.
5- Terms and Conditions of program have change several times. The wording is tricky and nobody knows for sure if they have to do a full 15mins a day nor if they even have to do one every day. We do know for sure that it is a 10 day contest running Mon-Fri between the hours of 6am est and 11pm est.
6- You may book up to a 7night stay including weekends.
7- There is a confirmed case of being able to book as far ahead as mid-January 2010, so it looks as though you should be able to book almost any period of time within the next 365 days.
8- LMT does NOT take the Discover card, so be prepared with a Visa or Mastercard.

They are serious about the 1 booking per person rule. They are calling every single person who has "won" to verify phone numbers. They are also tracking IPs, cookies, and checking credit card information to find duplicate addresses, names and bank info. If you are caught with more than one booking, all your bookings will be canceled.

GOOD LUCK ALL!!!!!

1:27AM est because of the Cancun boat! That must be a clue!

But yeah, I think it was great for the company to be running this. A lot of people who tried hard did get a hotel, while others did not. You can't always expect to win when entering a contest/promotion. As for changing the rules in week 2, I think they had no other choice. If they had run it on Monday, I feel as though they would've had to give about 2,000 hotels which matches the price of a super bowl commercial, and I don't feel like the company could've done that after giving almost 1000 hotels the first week. For making up Monday's debacle, they ran the promotion twice on Tuesday which I'm sure many people didn't realize that. The company did change the T&C several times to protect themselves which was expected after people finding exploits or easier methods of getting free hotels. I know a lot of people who won, and I feel the chances of winning a hotel was a lot higher than one of those 1 in 10 chance Pepsi bottle caps.

I think the main problem people had was with the lack of communication. This was a promotion run by LMT, and they only hurt themselves by quietly changing the terms and confusing a lot of people.
