There's also this "open letter" to us customers... An open letter to our shoppers As you may know, we are in the midst of the first strike in the history of our 77-year old company. It comes at a time when our business is facing fierce competition in a down economy. Raley's has been impacted significantly by the recession and the continued expansion of other stores selling groceries. Unfortunately, most of these stores are non-union, with lower operating costs that have made it harder for Raley's, Bel Air and Nob Hill Foods to remain competitive. As a result, our market share has suffered a significant decline. In an effort to stabilize and put us back on a growth path, we have focused on two critical areas: reducing our operating costs and improving the value we deliver our customers. Here are the facts of our current contract offer we provided to the union: Industry-leading wages We are not seeking any reductions to the industry-leading hourly wages we pay to our employees, but we are freezing all increases for two years - just as we've done throughout our entire company.
The health and welfare plan proposed to the UFCW union employees is better than the current plan implemented for employees of our corporate office and our non-union stores. We have proposed changing the management of the health and welfare benefits to Raley's. Raley's currently manages more than 30 different healthcare plans for our employees, and through our experience and efficiency, we will be able to realize significant cost savings. Under our proposed plan, all full-time and part-time employees will receive the following benefits:
** Dependent on health plan and hours worked Let me be clear, the new health and welfare plan we are proposing is one of the best in the industry. And, while we continue to provide medical coverage to retirees up to the age of 65 years old, we can no longer afford to provide health and welfare coverage to retirees once they qualify for Medicare. Today, less than 15% of employers are providing post-65 retiree benefits, with the number decreasing every year. How else we are reducing operating costs?
Sincerely, http://www.raleys.com/images/imageslayout/mjt-sig.gif Mike Teel President and CEO, Raley's Family of Fine Stores Have BTFE, a few inserts a week, several PCs to print IPQs, please PM for trades, thanks!
