So my car needs a rear brake pad replaced. The dealership told me it would cost $275 for a single brake pad to be installed. That sounded absurdly high to me. Am I correct in that assumption?
Do you know of any places that do a good job replacing brake pads for less money? I don't know that I have the confidence in my mechanical skills to attempt it myself, unless it's just super super easy. I'd rather pay a little bit of money than die.
yes it is absurdly high. Brakes are pretty easy to change (but I also don't do it myself) any local shop should be able to do it for you at a much more resonable price. I just have the Arco station around the corner do it for me. If you want better service, you could check out the mechanics files at car talk: http://www.cartalk.com/content/mechx/ to find a recomended local mechanic.
depending on the type of car you own, $275 might be right in the ballpark of normal. Your other options to fix it include: going to non-dealer mechanic (careful not to void any factory warranty), or do it yourself (again, be aware this doesnt void your warranty).
the best way to find a reliable non-factory mechanic is by asking around where you live. friends, co-workers, people on the street - anyone you trust is someone to ask for their mechanic.
good luck, this isn't an easy task, but it's not a life or death one either.
