Deal Details

Update: Emailing them from their website works great. They will call you directly and they will have a written record of your complaint.
You can also call 1-800-824-9081 and at the voice menu say "cancel service".

I called DirecTV to see what counter offers they had in place. I am only a Select Choice customer from 1997 and have a 40 hour Tivo unit, and get free local channels. So my monthly bill after taxes is now $51.

Current deals:
$10 off a month for the next 12 month - no commitment
OR
$100 credit on your bill - no commitment
AND/OR
Free channels for a few months - no commitment
AND/OR
Miscellaneous DVR type of freebies/discounts - normally 2 yr commitment required.

Original posting deals that were going on:
Here is what the rep outlined (they know about the Dish Network special):
  • Upgrade Tivo to 80 hour free, and gives you a $100 rebate on top of that
  • 2 months Premium service free
  • 6 months of Showtime free
  • 3 months of Starz free

Hmmm....decisions, decisions.

Good luck!

Yup, that's why I edited my post right under the quote as I knew you meant about the DVR but was just giving my opinion on getting anything in writing from them because it still doesn't matter. They can and do change their agreements whenever it suits them.

And I also have old equipment they said they didn't want as well and kept it just in case because their word is worthless.
Excellent!

Edited to add: I realize what I quoted you is for a different issue but wanted to express my opinion when it comes to getting anything in writing from them.

Why? I have an email from them sent to me on May 18th 2012 that says

Thank you for being a DIRECTV customer. In addition to having the very best in entertainment, you will be receiving the HD experience you know and love FREE FOR 2 YEARS!

Last month they started charging us for the HD access. Been back and forth and they refuse to honor it.

Their response to the email is the offer is no longer available. So if someone has something in writing they can say that same thing to them as well.

Filed a complaint with the BBB out of principle but don't expect anything to amount of that.

Been with them for about 10 years and their customer service has gone down the crapper but I'm unfortunately locked into a two year contract due to an equipment upgrade (went from a very old SD box to a very old HD box) last May and am stuck with them until next year.
I highly doubt you are stuck.....how much is your monthly programming/bill? I'm willing to bet it's more than $20 a month which is your ETF per month remaining on your contract. If you have 12 months left that is only $240. Compare that to how much you are going to pay them in monthly fees until your contract is up and that will tell you if you are stuck.Cool

I switched to Dish about 2 months ago. I wanted whole home DVR and DTV would not offer me anything, even though I was a 7 year customer. They were going to charge me $400 to set up a Genie in my house with 3 additional TVs. I immediately called Dish and they set me up with a Hopper, 3 additional TVs, premiums for 3 months, and a $20 credit for a year. Right now I am saving $75/month with Dish and I have superior equipment than I did with DTV. Even after the credit expires, I am still saving $55. After I installed Dish I called DTV to cancel and they were flabbergasted. They sent me to retention and the guy said, "I wish you would have spoken to me. I could have done something for you." I told him they should allow ALL of their employees to work with and retain long-time customers. I also told him it's bad business to treat potential customers better than long-time, loyal customers. Anyway, if you want an actual deal, make the switch. That extra $75 in my pocket is pretty slick.

When the deal is over with Dish, Directv will treat you much better. At that time your deal with Dish will be over, and I bet you can save a lot of money by switching back to directv...

I have decided that I will no longer accept being treated like crap while new customers are treated like family... The only acceptable standard is the same deal as you are giving to new customers. That means, I will probably never stay with any TV hose for more than 2 years...Moreover, the fact that the monthly cost goes up by more than $20 per month after the first year, means that I will probably change TV ho EVERY YEAR...

There you go....you got them right where you want them....tell them to cancel it...too damn expensive, you'll pay the ETF. They'll probably give you a deal to keep ya!

Yeah, I have thought about switching back after my 2 years. I see a lot of people do that by the responses here.

Called and was offered the Genie whole home upgrade for 4 HDTV's for free. I even get to keep my existing HD-DVR so I won't lose any recorded content. Sweet!

I had called last week and was offered free Genie and free installation as well as all other hardware needed to update my system. The CS rep said to keep my two existing HD DVRs and one of my HD receivers. That those are better than getting the mini-Genies. She said that the Genie and DVRs would all work together to share the DVR recordings. I am researching this on several websites to ensure I understand the system I will have. Additionally was offered $10 off per month for 12 months. I do have to sign for a 2 year agreement. Since directv has the best packages compared to the cable in my rural area and Dish would costs me more after the first year I think I will accept their offer.

My contract was up in June and I called them and told them I was getting offers from Comcast and AT&T to switch and I was looking for a retention offer. I already have 3 HD DVR's and 1 HD box along with 2 SD boxes. They offered me a Genie and one client box to swap out my 2 SD boxes for free and free install, a $200 Visa gift card, free HD and DVR for a year ($20 off a month), and free Starz/Showtime for 6 months. I thought this was very competitive to what the competition was offering so I signed up for another 2 yrs. I have nothing but good things to say about their service.

Good to hear some are still happy with Directv, there is still hope for existing customers. They finally released an android app for the tablet. https://play.google.com/store/app...or&feature
Ironically my Sony S is the only compatible device and it's pretty picky about apps. I just need to rewire some things to get the DVR on the same network.

I'm about to disconnect my DirecTV service and start over in my wife's name. When she starts over, where do we get the best deal - by calling DirecTV, Or Costco or BestBuy or any other outlet?

Also, any recommendation how long should I wait before my wife starts the service in her name?

I did it all in the same day. install was made on the same day that I did the cancellation.

From my understanding that is correct. The rep showed me the Genie/H34 and said each TV would have a "receiver-like device" about the size of a small tablet that you can mount behind the TV or something.

Here is more info on the genie http://www.directv.com/technology/genie
what is the total tv's that can connect in a house?
