Deal Details

Update: Emailing them from their website works great. They will call you directly and they will have a written record of your complaint.
You can also call 1-800-824-9081 and at the voice menu say "cancel service".

I called DirecTV to see what counter offers they had in place. I am only a Select Choice customer from 1997 and have a 40 hour Tivo unit, and get free local channels. So my monthly bill after taxes is now $51.

Current deals:
$10 off a month for the next 12 month - no commitment
OR
$100 credit on your bill - no commitment
AND/OR
Free channels for a few months - no commitment
AND/OR
Miscellaneous DVR type of freebies/discounts - normally 2 yr commitment required.

Original posting deals that were going on:
Here is what the rep outlined (they know about the Dish Network special):
  • Upgrade Tivo to 80 hour free, and gives you a $100 rebate on top of that
  • 2 months Premium service free
  • 6 months of Showtime free
  • 3 months of Starz free

Hmmm....decisions, decisions.

Good luck!

Each of my first two calls to a DirecTV CMR only got me the "existing customer special": Free upgrade to HD dish w/ free installation, but $199 for a HD DVR. And no specials/credits on programming Some special. Guess I'll have to escalate it to retention and hope they don't call my bluff, 'cause I'd like to keep my account with them.

That is a really good deal, I need to call them and try again. I have less than a year left on my current contract (like 7 months). About getting the new DVR with VOD, there is no such thing. Both the HR20 and HR21 get VOD, all it is is a firmware upgrade to allow it. The HR20 is the better of the 2 recievers though, the HR21 is more of a budget model without antenna, and I forget the other diffences.
Sounds like a good deal.
What channel package did you get?

What is the difference between HR20 and 21? Except for the color of course.

HR21 runs faster and cooler, but won't accept an OTA antenna.

I know this is a bit off topic, but I finally canceled my account with DTV. What a breath of fresh air! They roped me into a 2 year contract almost exactly 2 years ago today without even telling me and they would not budge. I had my account on hold for over a year now and I was finally able to cancel today. Awesome!

So for those of you that are wondering - as far as I can tell suspending your account does not extend your agreement.

Just got off the phone with direct tv. We were only one year into our contract so we had a full year left but here is the deal we got :

1 Free HD DVR (the new one with VOD)
2 HD DVR for $99 (the new one with VOD)
3 HD service free for a year
4 Starz, Showtime, Cinemax, HBO free for 6 months
5 Free install
6 $10 off per month for a year

We called and the first person we talked to did not want to give us anything. Got switched to a second person who would not give us anything. Finally got a supervisor the third time around and got the above offer. I thought $99 for two HD DVR's was pretty sweet along with all the other discounts I am a happy camper.

Good luck to everyone getting this deal.

Chris
So, did you call three times or did this happen on 1 call itself? Did you need to threaten to cancel? I have called retention 3 times and haven't gotten a better deal than 1 HD DVR for 99 and $10 off for 12 months.

Yes it was all in one phone call. (I was talking to customer service, I never spoke to the retention department) The whole process took over an hour. Yes you absolutely need to threaten to cancel. Tell them that Comcast, Verizon, and Dish network are offering better services for less money. Look at my post and tell them that is what you want. Don't settle for anything less. Ask for supervisors, make several calls, whatever you need to do. Keep plugging away until you get what you want.

Wow, in less then five minutes I just got $10/mo off for a year! I've been with them for 10yrs but haven't bothered them all year so it was time to beg again. It goes something like this.
I called 1-800-494-4388 and suffered through some of the stupid voice prompts.
Then I just said "cancel" (old trick) but told the pleasant CSR guy I was just trying to downgrade my HD + package to save money and flustered by the voice menu. He immedieatly offered 5$/mo off but I politely complained about paying for another HD extra $4.99 fee a few months back. Then he doubled down with $10/mo off for a year. I didn't want to push my luck but I was interested in Cinemax and he threw in 3 months free also on top of the instant discount. I thanked him and told him I'd spread the good word about Directv.

heh....that was one good rep. He got off easy with your measly ten dollar offering. You should have tried for more. What are they going to say? No?

Just got off the phone with DTV.
on the menu i said 'cancel'
spoke with a nice lady for 10 minutes.
told her that ATT came to my house and offered me a great deal with their UVERSE service.
She knew what I was talking about although I was bluffing regarding the deal I got. and 3 minutes later gave me all that:
free HD for 6 months
$10 off/6 month
1 month for free
free hbo/showtime/encore for 6 months

I hope that helps guys...
GOOD LUCK!
Btw, i called at 11:30 Pacific time, so maybe the late hour had a plus ;@)
Over all, i am happy...

I just got off the phone with retention ... let them know my phone company was offering a bundle package w/Dish Network (which is true) but I wanted to see what I would qualify for as an existing customer.

Here's my offer:
$10/off month for a year
3 months free Starz
6 months free HBO
6 months free Showtime/Cinemax

free DVR (just regular. I don't have HDTV. LOL)
free installation
free shipping & handling

I took the offer Smilie

2 HD DVR for $99 each after $100 credit x 2
$10 mo credit x 12
3 mos. free Showtime (already have HBO)
Free basic installation

I've been with Directv since 96 and would like to upgrade to HD (I have Verizon Fios for
internet, so that's an option as well). The problem is that I really like the Sunday Ticket.
If they call my bluff and I cancel, would they let me sign up as a "new customer" in, say,
August, and get all of the free stuff that way?

I want to have this figured out before I call.

Thanks in advance.
