It's that time of year again when Garage sales are popular. I have seen some discussion of Garage Sales in regular discussion threads, and perhaps there is talk of it in the BS thread, but I think it would be good to have it's own thread and people can add in the WIKI what sold for them and at what price - or what they will sell it for.

This way people having a garage sale can have a nice reference sheet and can learn from the mistakes of others. I will post in the WIKI info I have read.

Yes, I am having a garage sale this weekend at a friends work. I have read some info on another site and it is nice that they have their own thread for this.

Garage sales are not for everyone, please no bashing on those who wish to do it. It's a way to make money to buy more coupons and fuel your 'addiction'. LOL!

Mods, if you think this would be better suited in a different forum, please advise or move. I just thought it would be good to have a garage sale discussion and a WIKI to boot to help others.

Thanks!

Vicki

PLEASE NOTE: This WIKI is a reference guide to price the items you may have. Know your states laws before selling new unopened items or medicine. Laws vary from state to state, and can from city to city on what is allowed to be sold at a garage sale or flea market. Sell at your own risk. Thanks!

Garage Sale Tips:
- Use a muffin tin to keep coin denominations separated.
- A fishing tackle box is a great way to keep money safe and organized - coins separated in the compartments, and bills underneath. Some even have locks
- Use a carpenter's apron with pockets in the front. Works great, bills and .5 and .10 on one side, .25 on the other. It goes with you, for safety and conveience. Works great for school soncession stands too..

Here is how I think we can get a good array of information for each product/item. Let's say Toothpaste for example. If one person sold it successfully at $1, and another at $1.50 and another at $1.25...post it like this

Toothpaste 4.0z: $1.00; $1.25; $1.00; $1.50
Toothpaste 6.0z: $1.50; $1.00

Then people can get an array of info on the price point to sell their items. If anyone has any better suggestions, please post it. Anyone can edit the WIKI - just hit EDIT on the bottom of the WIKI post. :-)

Please post what you sold items at in your individual post - and if you are in a big metropolis or not - this sometimes makes a difference.

Great idea! OP. I'm actually having a garage sale this weekend. One thing that I learned is most things should be at least prices 50% of retail (if not less) and don't put ALL of ONE ITEM that you have out at the same time (as far as stockpile items). Someone said that people are more willing to DEAL when you have MORE of something. Example: if you have 10 new "widgets" don't put all 10 "widgets" out at once. LMAO

I also advertised in the paper. I'm also trying something new. Since I have to work Friday...I'm doing my sale 5-8 p.m. and then Sat. 8-2 p.m. (Just thought I'd have no competition at 5 pm on a Friday so I'll let you all know how it works out).

Any other suggestions?

Are you saying that people are expecting to deal and haggle you down if you have 10 items out vs. 3? If you have 3 items out they are more likely to buy it at your price? The way you say more willing to deal can be read two ways...just clarifying. I appreciate your input. ;-)

HAVE YOUR RECEIPTS SOMEWHERE CLOSE BY in case you get nosey people questioning you. I have read in threads that someone had the cops called on them because some people thought she stole it all. You don't have to let police in your house if they don't have a warrant. Don't let them in. I know you have nothing to hide, but there is no reason to let them in. (Just reminding you of your rights) Easiest if you have a box of receipts to show them to prove you bought it all. It will shut them up and they will be on their way. ;-)

This is something you may not think of, so I'm just reminding you. I keep my receipts in a Huggies Wipes container. I love those things. ;-)

Vicki.

Well when you get as much as I do, selling it all at $1 a piece can yield you a hefty profit. The one thing I won't YS is food. I may give samples of stuff away but won't sell it.

I get the exact same thing here. I dont back down, tho. I always gave good discounts and people started taking advantage. Having first sale of the year starting tomorrow. I usually get good crowds and this haggling is annoying and takes up too much of my attention when you've gotta watch the people, just hope I can stand my ground . DH will be here, too, but, you know men, they get distracted or fall asleep.Roll Eyes (Sarcastic) ZzZZz

I am having my first yard sale tomorrow and Saturday. I listed on craigslist and topix.com. It seems like more people in my area are on topix than craigslist since I live in a small town. I have followed some of the suggestions of the posters on here, especially the "haggling" suggestions. My neighbor has already emailed me asking " do neighbors get discounts?" I emailed her back and politely told her that my merchandise is already marked 40-50% off Walmart's prices and that I couldn't go any lower.shake head ( I might have made my first enemy, but I don't care since her ankle biters are always after me when I walk past her house)LMAO
Would those be kids or animals???Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)
Good luck!!!
Guess I should try Craigslist, too.

I don't shop wags, but I sold Playskool diapers for $8pk (cvs exclusive, reg 14.99 usual sale 9.99) Found that size newborn & 1 barely sell, most people ask for size 3 and up. I'm guessing these are more equivalent to the cvs brand ones, so I think at $5 they would fly.
haven't tried wags diapers myself, but everyone says they are the best store-brand diapers out there, basically comparable to huggies, and I know a few people moved a lot @ $5 per package.

Just my opionion,
Your prices are a little confussing & I think shoppers are going to get confussed & you may also. My first sale I did it that way & no one could keep track.

I would do one big table with deodarants, glade candles, toothbrushes & toothpaste, shampoo all that stuff that is about $2 and do $2 each or 3 for 5 Some items you may have gotten a little more from but other items like the toothbrushes you were going to get less for so it will definitly even out. It will be way easier for you & your customers.

Then maybe do a $4 table or 3 for $10 with the razors & more expensive items.

Then maybe a table of 1.25 or 5 for 5 if you think you need it

It keeps it easier & you won't have to deal with all that change if you can keep most items at 1 price.

Good luck

$1.50 is the cheapest I'd ever go on garnier.

price however you like, just clearly mark everything with a price tag, and have a calculator handy.

I agree to keep the prices as simple as possible. There are some items that I would love to mark at .75 or $1.25 but I don't because it gets to be too confusing, I either up it or eat it. It all works out.

For me, Shampoo does not sell well. I really hesitate to buy it even when they pay me to take it because all my sales are outside my home and those boxes are so damn heavy to move. But for others, shampoo flies. I priced all mine at $1.50 and it sells, just doesn't sell out.
