Why Do So Many NFL Players Go Bankrupt?
Often, those who complain about the concentration of wealth, will denigrate those who create wealth as being "lucky", and not distinguishable from others who could achieve just as much given the same "advantages". It's interesting to note how many of those who achieve sudden wealth don't seem to be able to retain that wealth. Is it possible that aside from the efforts required to generate wealth, this might be part of the reason for that concentration of wealth? Some are just better at not only creating wealth, but retaining it, and growing it?

There were similar numbers published (though I don't think it was as high) for the NBA. The NBA players union of course disputed the figures.
Just because you're rich or live a high life, does not make you better at managing finances. Often times, those who come into sudden wealth are some of the worst money managers. Somebody published that story earlier of the girl in britain who won over 2 million pounds in the lottery and spent 750,000 pounds on designer clothes and something like 400-500 thousand on cocaine. She's now back working as a clerk in a store for 4 pounds an hour. It's not unique to the UK. US lotto winners have a higher likelihood of declaring bankruptcy than non-lotto winners. Basically, often times the people that whine about the rich and their wealth have no clue how wealth is created or retained. Oprah did that social experiment where she gave a homeless man $100 thousand dollars and before he knew it, he was back on the street again. Of course, he managed to buy a decked out $35,000 truck in the process and buy one of his homeless friends a cheaper car. The truth: Management at IRS can blame themselves and how they have chaotic and poor management, but God-forbid you, or I, or anybody else in America gets audited and doesn't have their ducks in order and s***-together, your ass is going to court or jail.
Shout out to Congressman Mike Kelly for stating it as it is... Link [realclearpolitics.com] |

A better methodology would have been to "pay" the homeless guy $100k for "starring" in the film. That would eliminate the fear of having the asset reclaimed by its original owner, and it would also give the homeless guy the feeling of ownership. IE, it's not "found" money; it's money he "earned." http://www.associatedcontent.com/...html?cat=9 "Out of many, we are one; ... while we breathe, we hope, and where we are met with cynicism, and doubt, and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes We Can." -- President Barack Obama

She married 3 times. Her last husband died and left her in charge of his philanthropies and his fortune, which she invested and grew, allowing her to leave such a huge fortune to charity. A little more noble than pissing it away on drugs, hookers, and fighting dogs...... And why such a vitriolic, sophomoric attack on this dead woman? Is it because she doesn't fit the leftist stereotype of the rich?

Athletes, especially NFL athletes, aren't really the best sample. Information is coming to light about the effects of repeated head trauma, even low-level impacts, and it's scary. I wonder if getting smacked in the head a few times a week since they were 14-15 is contributing to the bad decisionmaking at 22.

The rich are rich because they have habits which make them rich and retain that wealth.
People who are not rich and try to give the illusion that they are wealthy quickly lose their wealth. For example, buying a 40k BMW that is worth 1/3 of that in a few years rather than saving up money to buy a house as a long term rental property which can be flipped in 10 years for 100k+ profit in the right area. |
