Thread Details

I saw this week that two of the Costcos in San Jose received shipments of the Lava Grande Lava Lamps. Drool These are 27 inches and 250 ounces of pure awesomeness! I have been wanting one for years, but have been unable to find them in any retail stores. Target.com carries the purple/orange ones for $80. When they had a free shipping promotion I ordered one. It arrived cloudy, from being shaken during transit (white dye leaks from the wax and this is permanent.) Because you could return them in-store, I ordered four more...all cloudy. I ordered ten more...all cloudy. I gave up at this point. Weeping

Imagine my shock at seeing a whole pallet of these at Costco! I grabbed a couple, cut them open and jumped up and down gleefully...they were crystal clear! Yahoo!

They have four varieties: Purple/Orange, Blue/Green, Clear/Red, and Purple/Pink. It's the perfect gift for a kid, or an adult like me who acts like a kid. Who doesn't like lava lamps? Who knows if Costco will continue to carry them, or it's a one time shipment, so if you want one, I'd jump on it! Costco doesn't even have them online.

At $40, for one guaranteed to be clear, it is definitely a Slick Deal to me! In fact, I think I will head back tomorrow and pick up a few more. You can never have too many lava lamps!! Crazylaugh

The replacement lamps are hard to find. I had go to to a pool/spa supply house.

I forgot to mention that I had also ordered one from Bestbuy.com, and it arrived cloudy. I also ordered two from Spencers.com...yep, both cloudy. Moral of this story is don't order these online!

I just got back from Costco with two more of these puppies! Half of the lamps were gone already, and there was only one blue/green one left. On my way out, five different people commented on them!! Smilie

LOL! Your commentary had me in stitches! Bought my daughters the small lava lamps at target B&M. And, they were cloudy...so returned them. I had assumed that lava lamps were not as cool as I remembered (or as they appear in retro-movies.)
wish there were a Costco near me as my kids were crushed at having to return the lava lamps and they would be thrilled to get a new mega one at Christmas.
Out of curiosity, how long does it take the mega ones to get rolling and what is the max time recommended to run?

So, how do you go about buying one? I wanted a lava lamp forever. This seems like a good opportunity to get one.

How do you go about it? Just wander around Costco 'til a lava lamp hits you in the face?

I saw the lava lamp today, it's HUMONGOUSSSS, around 2 feet tall

it'd be too big for my desk. lol

I wonder what kind of light bulb does it use.

the standard size lava lamp light bulb already costs $5+ for one. Pricey.

Lava Grande bulbs are apparently $5 as well, at least at the official site [lavalite.com]. Their shipping is rather steep though, at around $6 per bulb, so it would probably be best to find them elsewhere.

It's possible that other equivalent bulbs might work as well, but you would have to make sure fit properly, and are of the same wattage.

Also, for comparison, these Lava Grande Lamps are $90 plus over $10 shipping from Lavalite's official store. [lavalite.com]

They do take a couple of hours to get going, and the official recommendation is not to run them for over ten hours. I turn them off when the lava breaks up into small balls, which means it is overheating.

Unlike the Pet Rock, lava lamps are timeless! Cool2

I'm sure you can make room for it on your desk. Get a smaller monitor and put your printer on the floor. Biggrin2

It uses a 100 watt floodlight bulb. $5 is too pricey for thousands of hours of marveling at more than two feet of mesmerizing motion in a zen-like state of bubbling bliss!?!! Bigeye

Step 1: Enter Costco.
Step 2: Wander aimlessly about the warehouse, enjoying free samples of Benefiber, joint juice, and dried fruit, and marvel at the enormous buckets of Mayonnaise.
Step 3: Run to bathroom when Benefiber kicks in.
Step 4: After several days, finally come across huge shrine of Lava Grande Lamps.
Step 5: Spend a few hours arguing with yourself over which color to get.
Step 6: After finally making your selection, slowly and gently cradle your new baby in your arms and carry it to the checkout line, and then on to your vehicle. (Don't use a cart and risk shaking it up!) Bask in all the attention and admiration you receive along the way. Drool
Step 7: Secure your new baby snugly in the back seat with seatbelt. Don't exceed 25 mph on your drive home.
Step 8: Get home, plug it in, and bow before the humongous tower of lava before you! worship

Go get one...they are cooler looking than you can imagine, and I promise you'll love it! Ok
