It is free to play.

If you buy the game, they give you 20 characters and a tiny amount of riot points... but nothing is stopping you from playing and "buying" those characters for free.

I'll try and find it again but I ended up on a page of their website that said "PRE-ORDER NOW - ONLY $30" and it had a "BUY NOW" button. It seemed odd to me since you guys kept talking about how it was free and always will be.

This ^

IIRC, you can buy a "Digital Collector's Edition" which has some of the unlockables already unlocked. You can, however, download it for free and, with a bit of playing time, unlock those things yourself.

So I just played my first normal match with a friend (two matches actually) and got trashed both times. I played as Malphite and Sion. We started out fine, but towards the end they made a push and just swamped us. It was definitely fun though, and I really hope they implement in-game chat soon because I can't imagine playing without talking (my friend and I were on Skype).

I made a second account to play w/taokay, so that he didn't have to go up against level 30s as a level 5, and I went 25/0/3 (25 kills, 0 deaths, 3 assists)

Was awesome.. hahah

Man I love this game. I play it almost everyday with a buddy of mine over Skype, but my record is so terrible! I feel like I've gotten better, but I always get stuck with ppl who suck, leavers, etc. Just gotta keep playing I guess. People don't see your losses haha.

I had a question for everyone: how many of you have bought or are planning to buy the Collector's Pack? I was thinking about it, but I also feel that it would take away some of the longevity of the game.

I've gotten really good at LoL. I think most skill just comes with playing normal games and not practice games. The bots are so easy that you can't really learn how to play effectively.

Whenever I try a new character I go to thelolwiki.com to look up some basic strategies for the character and then I adapt it to my play style. Always useful when you don't know where to start when using a new champion.

As for the collector's pack, I have no intention of buying it. I started playing LoL because it was free and that is how it is staying for me. I already bought all the 450pt characters from the store and a couple 1350pt characters and 3150pt characters. The store is what makes me play more as I want to keep earning points to unlock new guys. Makes me feel like I'm earning things.

Yeah I usually play one practice game whenever I try out a new champ just so I can test out the moves and stuff. Then I check out leaguecraft.com for strats. It's an awesome site with some really in depth stuff.

And yeah I know what you're saying about unlocks; it definitely gives the game a lot of progression.

Yeah, I have no intentions of purchasing the collector's pack. I'm already level 30 and don't have too many more runes to *replace* (read: already have all my runes, upgrading a few to better ones).

I dropped $10 for a gang ghost skin, but then I saw that it wasn't available... I bought the Yi skin, and I'll just hold onto the rest of my points for when gang's ghost becomes available.

At the moment, my ratio isn't too bad... I think I have something like 155/135... Was on a pretty big winning streak, but then I had a decent amount of losses yesterday. I think at one point I was up 25 games, but now I'm around 20.

You know, I think this is the first game I'm actually starting to get kinda addicted to. I play for a few hours straight with my buddy some days, and we're always talking about it. Then I'll go online and just look at strategies. I hope this "addiction" goes away before school starts up again! Then again, if this is the only game I play for awhile, it'll save me a lot of money lol.

Anyone else interested in starting to post our champion builds, items, and basic strategy? I use various sites to get me started, but 95% of the time, my end build isn't anything like any strategy I've seen.

Thought it might be helpful to share some of our techniques.

BT
BT
Replace PS w/BF
Finish off 4th BT
Replace BB w/PD
Final: 4xBT 2xPD (or 1xPD 1xTF)

Strategy
Early Game:
- Try for an early kill if your lane parter is competant.
- If no early kill is available, stay back and only use Parrrley to finish mobs off and get gold. Look for your first few pricepoints. Try to stay in your lane as long as possible to push pricepoints the best you can.
- You *CAN* harass players w/Parrrley, but because you do so little damage, it's not really worth trying until you have a BF/BT, or unless the enemies are low HP casters.
- If you CAN get up to PS/VS/Boots, recall and grab that before pushing any further.
- Finish off bloodthirster / start looking for barrage targets.

Mid Game:
- Start ganking people.
- Push towers evenly (kill a tower in your lane, then move to a lane w/out a first tower down, etc).
- Keep your BT(s) charged up.
- You'll most likely be working on your PD during mid game.
- If you're taking a lot of damage, consider switching from PD build to TF build and getting phage ASAP for some extra HP.
- If you're having a serious problem w/magic, forgo one BT for a Banshee Veil.
- If you're edging out in kills, consider grabbing a BF before finishing off your PD. That extra damage will decimate enemy champs on Parrrley crits.
- Make sure you're killing dragon when it's up.
- Kill the golem as much as possible so you can afford to toss Parrrleys out as much as possible

Late Game:
- Stack BTs like a mofo and make sure they're charged.
- Push towers hard and then retreat. Make sure you're using Rally before hitting a tower to get it down ASAP.
- Gank like a mofo. DO NOT CHARGE IN. You are not a tank and can be disabled easily.. however, in the confusion, you can easily own people w/Parrrley critsm, and your high damage/lifesteal should keep you alive as long as you watch yourself and remove scurvy if you get disabled.
- If you get 3 BTs and your PD, enjoy soloing baron. (Might need an extra BF).

Skill Strategy
Parrrley:
- My favorite skill.
- Nets lots and lots of money.
- Because you stack damage (BTs) and crit runes, you're going to have the largest crits of any champ, which can turn the tide of battle in literally 1 second. Largest I've had so far is 1725 w/3 BTs, 1 PD and 1 BF.
- Don't listen to idiots that tell you you're supposed to harass w/it. If you can, you can, if you can't do it successfully (as in, actually get a kill), then you're just wasting mana, and therefore money.
- Not 100% sure, but I believe this attack ignores armor and is not affected by magic resistance. I've had several malphites complain to me that they got full damage when I have absolutely no armor penetration and they have 80% damage reduction.

Remove Scurvy:
- Possibly the best skill gang has.
- This is a decently quick refreshing cleanse.
- Gets out of all snares instantly. This is particularly effective against an alistar who tries to slam you and then knock you back. If you react quickly enough, you should be faster than him and therefore he will not be able to get around you to knock you back.
- Cleanses exhaust. The potential for this is obvious.
- Cleanses silence. This is an important benefit that people often overlook. They get silenced and say, "crap! I can't fire my barrage and run." Oh yes you can... just RS first!
- DO NOT WASTE IT TOO EARLY. If you see multiple stunners, try to time things so that you get multiple stuns/slows on you before you use it, otherwise you'll have to wait another 30 seconds and will most likely get owned.
- Do not use this as health. In late game, it heals a decent amount, but because you go almost the entire game w/this at level 1, it is NOT a significant source of HP, and will burn your mana. If you're trying to stay just a little longer to hit a pricepoint and be somewhat safe, then you can consider using it... but you'll most likely want your mana for parrrleys, or to use this skill if you need to get out of a snare.

Rally:
- The majority of the time, the big bonus of this skill is just using the passive effects.
- Use this before hitting a tower. Time it on the minions you use it on. Wait until a melee minion has had 2 hits from a tower, or until a caster minion has been hit once. Do it as fast as you can after the turret gets the minion down low, but the nice part about this skill is that, even if the tower kills the unit before your projectile reaches the minion, you STILL get the buff. That being said, you have to fire the rally before the minion gets hit by the last shot.
- DO NOT use this on tank minion. Turrets take a long time to kill those, so it's a waste, even if you would get a few extra hits in.
- You *can* use this skill to try to escape pursuers, but more likely than not, you'll end up screwing yourself because of the half second your char takes to stop and fire off the projectile.
- If you have allies around you, try to position yourself so that they get the buff as well when *you* fire the rally (it's off of your position, not the minion you slay).

Cannon Barrage:
- Very difficult skill to use properly (I royally suck with it).
- Can be used as an escape, but should NEVER be relied on, as the hits can easily miss, and people can cleanse/jump/flash out of the area fairly easy.
- Can be used to help clear a lane w/a lot of minions pushing it. When you use it in this way, wait until the enemy mob gets up to a new line of friendly minions, or until right before they get to a turret. If you do it to early in the middle of the lane, the enemy mobs will kill your minions and the barrage will miss them. Make your own judgment based on the size of the enemy mob.
- LOOK ALL OVER THE MAP. Remember, this can be fired from anywhere and hit any place on the map. Give your friends an escape route if they need it, or help them finish off an enemy that is getting close to safety.
- Use this in conjunction w/exhaust. Start your barrage, then wait half a second to see if they flash. If they don't, exhaust them, pop a parrrley, and finish them off.
- If you're firing it at a pursuing/running enemy champ, try to aim ahead of them. This is very hard, because if they are quick on their feet, they can easily change directions and avoid it entirely. It's best to try to use this at a choke point where they HAVE to go through it or turn around and face your allies to die.
