What's the current deal with wii modding?

Updating the softmodded wii will result in nintendo deleting the homebrew channel and install stub ios files in place of all the cios that you might have installed.

For the chipped wii i believe they still work regardless of the nintendo update.

Good news is even after updating to 4.2 you can still fully hack your wii again.Check out the wii hacking forum on gbatemp.net and look for the guide thats made by xzxero.
It will allow you to reinstall all the stuff needed to be playing backups again.

Another thing nintendo has done to try to stop piracy is on the newest wiis the dvd drives will not play burnt discs period.Doesn't matter if you have a mod chip or soft mod it will not read a burnt disc,but playing from usb hard drive is still possible on these new dvd drives.

Hmm, interesting. I went ahead and did the update from the WSR disc. HBC is still there. I never installed any CIOS that I know of. After doing the update, I went in to the HBC and it downloaded a large update, installed a newer version of HBC and DVDX and said that on this Wii Bootmii could only be installed via CIOS or something. I didn't have an SD card to hand so didn't bother doig that, but I can't figure out how to get back to the automatic install of Bootmii from the HBC menu.

Will check out the guide you mentioned, I'd be interested in attaching an external hard drive, but kind of lost interest in the softmodding when it seemed I couldn't run backups or install Bootmii.

Bootmii can be installed as boot2 or as ios.The best option is as boot2 for sure but ios is better then nothing.To get back to that menu to install bootmii you will need to get the hackmii installer and run it from the HBC.It can be in the guide i talked about or you can get it directly from its makers at hackmii.com


EDIT: instead of going to gbatemp check out this site instead.It's the same thing that was at gbatemp but now has its own site/forum and will be a lot easier to read and will not be as clustered as gbatemp is.

Thanks - that's the message I got when the HBC update completed it's tests - BootMii couldn't be installed from boot2 but could be installed from ios. Reading the guides now.

Saw you guys post, and since you guys seem to know MUCH more than me about soft-modding the Wii. I was wondering if I just want to do nothing but have the ability to play backup and the originals (I don't care much for homebrew or other mods), is soft-modding the best way to go. (i.e. safest way to have the best compatibility without bricking my wii)

Soft modding is the free way to go.You can get a modchip that only allows backups but then your paying for the modchip plus you have to open your wii in order to install the modchip.

Softmod is all done through the sd card slot on the front of your wii.
Follow this guide here and all it will do is allow your backups to be played.
The guide doesnt include a program to play your backups though so you will need to find one on your own.

If your only going to playing backups from disc then get the latest version of NeoGamma.Latest version is RC1.If your gonna use a usb loader and play backups from an external hard drive then i would recommend one of the following loaders usb loader gx,wiiflow, or configurable usb loader.All of the loaders i talked about can be found on gbatemp.net on the wii backup loaders forums.

I've been holding onto two NIB wiis that I bought around March of 2009 (bought them before the $50 price drop). Are these more valuable because they will play burned discs?

not really.. wii with newer firmware has a difficult time to install Homebrew.. but once you got through it, a Wii is a Wii.

Hi,

I recently purchased a black wii and was trying to downgrade and sililar stuff and eventually downgraded to 2.0j (Japanese) and since I don't understand Japanese, I was messing around and got updated to 4.3j, now I don't know how to go back to 4.3u version.

I tried different wii hack sites, but no help so far.

If anyone knows the solution, please help me.

Why did you try to downgrade it to 2.0J?
