Attach a known-working external monitor to the laptop. You may need to press a Fn and"F" key combination several times to make the laptop sent it's video signal to the external monitor.
If you can see the laptop's display on the external monitor but the laptop's screen remains black, then the problem is the laptop's LCD inverter and/or backlights have failed. There is a chance that the cable that connects the LCD to the motherboard is loose; it should be easy to open up the laptop and re-seat this cable where it attaches to the MB.
If you cannot get a display on either the laptop's LCD or on a known-good external monitor, then the problem is probably with the laptop's video card (note: although some laptops have a seperate video card, but most are integrated into the motherboard).
What model of HP laptop, please? Is the laptop still under warranty?
The laptop is under warranty. Since I m travelling I didn't have an external monitor .
But I got the problem fixed with hp support. I had to get the battery n powercord out n then hold power button to get the static out!!
