I haven't received anything yet, but their website [budgetlivingmedia.com] indicates the following:

That's not entirely true. Your "free" subscription was PAID for by a sponsor, most likely Veteran's Advantage or Computer associates who paid Freebizmagazines about a buch and half for each sub they gave away. Budget living cannot ignore their subscriber obligations. Occasionally magazines manage who cannot find anyone to buy their subscriber base at a steep discount simply close up shop and get gobbled by their creditors.

That is unlikely with Budget Living - they had a strong subscriber base with good demographics that a number of magazineswould be ithcing to buy if they can get them for dirt cheap. They often buy up at under a dollar a subscriber, sometimes pennies but then after performing a merge/purge to figure out who is already a subscriber and who is new, they get to count all those new subscribers as PAID new subscriptions on their next ABC audit.

Good deal for them, sometimes good deal for us.

Sometimes it only takes a couple of months to sort out who takes over the magazine's subscriber obligations and sometimes it takes forever and a day. Galaxygirl is always on top of these things and will usually post in this thread or the one about the magazine. She has a mind like a steel trap when it comes to her mag subs and she doesn't let defunct mags get away with much!

Publishers must honor their subscriptions, even sponsored ones. The only ones they don't have honor are what are called "comps", people who are added to the subscriber rolls by the publisher themselves at no charge and who subs are not considered paid by ABC. Any paid sub, sponsored, discounted or brokered must be honored.

I used to just accept it when a publisher told me my sub was free and so I was out of luck but I have been much more aggressive after seeing others have successs. Nine times out of ten YOU know more about the situation than the customer service rep that you are talking to. I have found GalaxyGirl's posts to be supremely helpful in that regard. You can't go wrong if you follow her lead

Just got an e-mail from customer service:

Adore Media, Inc has been shut down the publication business and the July
2006 issue is going to be the last one. The July issue was mailed to your
registered address between May 10th and the beginning of June 2006.

They are refunding paid subscriptions only with proof of payment.

Most publishers will NEVER refund a sub without proof of payment. WHat they will do WITHOUT proof is sell your subscription and all the others to another publisher who will honor thier obligation. Don't sewat it folks. if you had a free sub - you prolly will get something eventually.

Several of our friends are now out of a job as Time, Inc. has just announced that they will cease publication of Teen People - effective with their September issue.

Adios to another teen magazine...

Glad to hear it about RADAR. My husband liked that mag. I hope they will honor our old subs. Any news, please post.

Most of us who had Budget Living have been getting Marie Claire instead. Good trade if ya ask me.

I got a letter in the mail and stated that my replacement for Budget Living will be Good Housekeeping. I got three issues already, but it is not the same as Budget Living.

I got my shop etc. subscription extended by ike 4-5 years =) yay! hope it stays alive for that long tho, lol...yea it said on bl's site that if you already subscribe to one of the titles, it would be extended, so i'm happy!

It hasn't ceased publication yet, but I don't see it lasting past the end of the year. The new format sucks. And blows. At the same time.

I just got a letter from "Science & Theology" magazine. They are ceasing publication as of the last issue (I think it was July). They lost their grant and the revenue from the subscriptions does not cover their costs.
