I work for IHG. You are supposed to have an employee card from your hotel that is issued from the general manager each time you make an employee booking. If the hotel lets you do it, so be it. No hotel that I associate in the group would let you check in without it and receive that rate of $29-59.
I also work for IHG, I found this thread looking up the IHG employee rate in Google just now because I'm planning a trip back home to Vancouver BC.
At the hotel I work if anyone comes here on employee rate they have bring a card signed and issued by the general manager of the hotel where you work. I've never stayed on an employee rate without a card being requested from staff and A year and half working where I do right now, every time there is a employee rate booked into our system we request the guest provides us with a card from the GM of there hotel when they arrive or a faxed copy before arrival. If they can't provide it, they can't stay. At the least we will give them the benfit of doubt that they just forgot to get it or lost it and we might with the authorization of our GSM and let them stay a single night if we/them can't get in contact with the GM/GSM of there hotel, but they would need to give us a credit card number. The next day if we contact the GM during business hours and his responce is "lolwhat? I've never heard of the guy and none of our staff is on vacation" you're going to get a visit from the police to your room door and the full rate posted on your credit card.
It probably isn't a good idea, I really doubt any hotel is going to let you in without a card, it is a pretty tightly knite company and if the word got out that the Hotel managed to over look something like this and the person got away with it, then someone is going to be knee deep in shit with head office and the franchise owner.
Also the cards are all uniform, so don't think taking a sheet of paper and writting lol I'm so and so from this hotel and I say this guy can stay here, trust me. The GM will just end up calling the hotel about it.
