Any alternatives for Samsung LinkStick Wireless LAN Adapter?

10,756 21,839 December 28, 2009 at 12:12 PM
I need help in connecting Samsung BD-P 1590 Blu-Ray Player with wireless internet.
I'm lil skeptical about spending $70-80 to buy Samsung LinkStick Adapter. Is there any low cost solution available to establish wireless internet connection with Blu-Ray Player?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You need to wait for a deal on a standalone wireless Ethernet bridge/adapter (rare), or dd-wrt compatible router that can be configured for the same (more common). There are also routers that can be configured as a wireless Ethernet bridge/adapter w/ their installed (native) firmware, but there are not many of these either (e.g., ZyXEL P330W).

I found this reply on one of the Samsung official forums:

Quote :
Currently, the only wireless adapter that can be used with the appropriate Samsung TVs is the Samsung Linkstick WIS09ABGN. The reason for this is that all other usb wireless adapters require drivers to work. Since there is no feasible way to transfer and save hundreds of different drivers for each adapter on the TVs, Samsung created a USB wireless adapter that will work 100% of the time (plug-n-play), with out drivers.

I'm going to try a second wireless router as suggested above.

Keep in mind that it is a "special"/specific type of router that you need to purchase. The routers can be found fairly cheaply and often you will see the deal thread littered with DD-WRT on it.

Very few consumer routers (un-hacked) will work in wireless bridge mode, and if they do they tend to be expensive.

I use this cheap stuff all the time and they work great in bridged mode. Some of our local PC shops carry the brand so you might have to look around to find TP Link products.

Supposedly the "Samsung's WIS09ABGNX LinkStick Wireless LAN Adapter" contains a Ralink "dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi chipset (RT2800U)" chipset. (Source [ralinktech.com])

Other USB Wifi sticks on the market contain this same chipset, so it is possible that they would also work with the Ralink drivers that are integrated into the Samsung Blu-ray player. It is also possible that the Samsung Blu-ray players are restricted to only work with the Samsung LinkStik USB adapter. One such device is the EDIMAX EW-7718Un [newegg.com]. I'd be very curious to hear if this works. Other possible devices according to internet searches:
Linksys WUSB54GC v3
Linksys WUSB600N
D-Link DWA-140
D-Link DWA-160
Belkin N+ F5D8055 v1
others listed here [drivershq.com]

Your best bet is to get a wireless bridge such as this one [newegg.com].

For my Samsung Blu-Ray player, I am using a netgear access point that I flashed dd-wrt turned onto and turned it into a bridge. Works okay, I have only been using it for a couple of days though..
On the wireless setting of the player, do not choose wireless. The player will say it does not work, choose wired and it works.

I had the same issue, and wanted to create a wireless bridge using by existing Belkin router. I lucked out in that it had the wireless bridging capability, and found another Belkin wireless router at Wally World for $29 that could also do it. The newer model that supports it is F5D7234-4 VER 1001. THe later versions DO NOT work, as reported by Belkin.

However, if your current wireless router does not support it, and you have to buy two matching routers to get it to work, the point is lost, eh? Good luck.

Yes, I have also heard that the Rosewill RNX-N1 USB adapter will work.

Here's [redflagdeals.com] a link for a discussion on this.

The Samsung's WIS09ABGNX LinkStick Wireless LAN Adapter is a re-badged D-Link DWA-140 or D-Link DWA-160.
