DirecTV Contract [directv.com]

DirecTV Contract Change Notification [directv.com]

Just call DirecTV at 1-800-531-5000, reference "4. CHANGES IN CONTRACT TERMS" in the DirecTV contract and state you do not accept the changes detailed in the contract change notification that take effect February 9, 2010.

Don't say you want to cancel because your canceling incurs the Early Cancellation Fee (ETF), instead, simply state you do not agree to the change in contract terms and they will be forced to end your contract as they can not provide one customer different terms than another. If they don't listen to you, send a certified letter stating you do not agree to the terms. Remember *not* to say you wish to cancel, only that you do not agree to the change in terms and conditions.

DIRECTV, Inc.
Customer Service
P.O. Box 6550
Greenwood Village, CO 80155-6550

4. CHANGES IN CONTRACT TERMS

We reserve the right to change the terms and conditions on which we offer Service. If we make any such changes, we will send you a copy of your new Customer Agreement containing its effective date. You always have the right to cancel your Service, in whole or in part, at any time, and you may do so if you do not accept any such changed terms or conditions. See Sections 5(b), (d) and (e) below. If you elect not to cancel your Service after receiving a new Customer Agreement, your continued receipt of Service constitutes acceptance of the changed terms and conditions. If you notify us that you do not accept such terms and conditions, then we may cancel your Service as provided in Section 5, as we cannot offer Service to different customers on different terms, among other reasons.

5. CANCELLATION

(c) Our Cancellation. We may cancel your Service at any time if you fail to pay amounts owing to us when due, subject to any grace periods, breach any other material provision of this Agreement, or act abusively toward our staff. In such case, you will still be responsible for payment of all outstanding balances accrued through that effective date, including the deactivation fee described in Section 2. In addition, we may cancel your Service if you elect not to accept any changed terms described to you, as provided in Section 4.

Written verification...VERY IMPORTANT!!!

If you get out of your contract and want it in writing get the reps name and Emp# then go to directv.com/email
and request email verification of contractual status. That way you have it both verbally and in concrete(writing)!

Isn't there some clause in there that says they can make any changes they want to?

Also, I don't see anything in the contract that says you can cancel without termination fee.

It probably won't work if the package you are currently on is not changing prices and you don't have the DVR service (since that's changing in price too).

Don't call and say you want to cancel, just say you do not agree to the change of terms and they will have to cancel you. If they don't do it over the phone, you may have to send a certified letter stating you do not agree to the change in contract.

Wish this had happened sooner, I had to pay to get out of my contract with DTV!
THEY WERE THE ABSOLUTE WORST COMPANY I HAVE EVER DONE BUSINESS WITH. I WILL NEVER HAVE DTV SERVICE AGAIN!

Repped!!!! I love sticking it back to them when companies change contracts. Imagine if you could simply say to them I don't like my rates anymore I'm changing what I pay. They signed a contract as much as you did for a set amount of time. The consumer never can change it but the company always can.

Repped for not accepting the change!

I have a few questions please;

When is the deadline to do this?
You mentioned this might not work who doesn't have dvr service, what if I add it and then call them in a few week or so?

TIA.

If anyone is interested i get great HD reception from a $20 HD antenna. Much better deal than the monthly cable bill.

So we've established that they'll cancel you, but at what cost?

Either you need DVR service (changing from $6 to $7) and/or your monthly service plan needs to be one of the ones listed stating a raise in cost of $3/mo.

In my experience, the contract change would have had to apply to you prior to DTV's announcement of the change. If you were to change your plan today, you would be renewing your contract under the new terms.

Do it for the right reason. I cancelled cuz they ticked me off on a service call and I moved over to DISH. BIG MISTAKE. I hate DISH. I get fewer channels (or at least, fewer of the channels I actually watch) and the price is higher. I also don't think their HD service is as good as DirecTV.

So, if you're just trying to cut costs...great. But if you want to do it because you believe the hype DISH is pushing...don't do it.
