Here is a post that has a utility to eliminate the cpu noise (at the cost of some battery time). http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?p=27350035#post27350035

For clean install of retail copy of Win7 HP. Here's a list of drivers that you should get:

To activate a retail copy with the OEM key, you have to follow directions for a phone activation

Bare minimum:
1. Latest Intel Graphics drivers from "Intel Driver Update Utility"
2. Broadcom Gigabit ethernet drivers from Gateway support
3. Intel iAMT driver from gateway support
4. Gateway Launch Manager (for the touch sensitive keys and onscreen display) from gateway support
5. PowerDVD8 from the recovery apps disc (for Blu-ray playback required)

Optional (recommended):
1. ALPs trackpad driver from gateway support
2. Intel Chipset driver from Gateway support

Do NOT:
1. Install the Realtek HD Audio driver. (Will enable the AC adapter beep) *FIXED WITH NEWEST DRIVER

For those who have Sony HDTV, either LCD or LED... follow this step to make sure your laptop display the correct resolution. I found this out by paying d@mn gateway Answers $60 but I had to semi help the guy as well!!!!

1. Have the HDMI cable plug into the laptop.
2. You will hear the noise of like when you plug in the usb flash drive if this is your first time connecting. If second time you will not hear anything. If everything goes well you will get a display on your tv as well as the laptop! If not the TV will say unsupported signal while the laptop screen still shows pictures. To fix that follow to step 3 below.
3. Right click on the desktop and go to where you set the resolution of your laptop display. Look at the third drop down box and chose Extend Display. Hit apply. Then chose Detect. You should see three screen in the box. Make sure you have three screen in the box, two will not work for some reason, you have to see three screens on there. Then click on identify and your TV will be detected, should be detected as screen 2. Hit apply.
4. Go into the intel graphics hd control panel in multiple display, chose the resolution of 1920x1080 and your laptop will switch over automatically to your tv. Everytime you plug into the HDMI cable, it will automatically switch over for you, and revert back to your laptop screen once the HDMI cable is unplugged! This method works also if you are connecting a hdmi to your laptop through a Home Theater Receiver. The problem with this is the sound still plays out from the laptop as I have not figured out how to make my receiver plays the sound from the hdmi cable Frown If anyone have any idea on how to do this PLEASE PLEASE add this to the wiki board so I won't have to spend another $60 or someone else! Thank you and enjoy....

Calibrate your screen
Here are three ways to calibrate the screen for more accurate colors. This will make your laptops screen look much better.

Another daily user with zero problems, tucked away inside my desk. I have it plugged in and use a 24" monitor, wireless mouse and keyboard. Recently opened it and couldn't stand the resolution after using a monitor. And I don't think I like the keyboard anyway so went back to the monitor. Not sure about the battery since it's more of desktop replacement. Just upgraded to a gaming rig with SSD and now looking for BF deal an SSD for this laptop.

What was the original warranty, one year? I used AMEX to double that so maybe I better check the battery with two years coming up.

wait a minute, I think I'm in the wrong thread. My NV59 was the one BB was mislabeled as an i3 when in fact it's a i5 for $500. oops

still rockin' this bad boy every single day. Burn dual layer discs all the time, watch blu rays through hdmi a lot, surf the net daily, use it for school, and etc.

haven't found a laptop to replace this badboy anytime soon.

I have used my warranty already when the harddrive gave out (not my fault), other than that this is the best buy i had on SD since I joined.

Help.. I'm having a couple of problems and have tried some fixes without avail.

1) Sound only comes out from one speaker (it wasn't always like this, I think I installed some driver one day and then it got screwed up)

2) Screen brightness - how to change it? When I view any videos in WMP or PowerDVD, they all look super dark to the point I can't see anything. But I generally like low brightness when performing other tasks and such.

Any help will be greatly appreciated and will rep!
Can someone please help me or direct me somewhere.. still having the same problems.

DVDs play SUPER DARK but it's only all DVDs and Blu-rays and CERTAIN videos on YouTube (I believe they are Windows video based or something, which isn't the majority of videos on YouTube).

Does anyone know what is the original battery life for this laptop? Newegg and amazon states about 4-5 hours! Right now my battery is dead, it can barely hold a charge for 30minutes. I thought about going on amazon or ebay to get third party battery but they said it can only last 2 hr since it's 6 cell. Is this true for all 6 cell laptop battery running this i5?

i get barely 3 hours running at max settings when I dont have this plugged in. I would say go for a bigger cell battery if you are concerned with battery life. I keep mine plugged in most of the time, but I usually am able to watch a full movie before the battery dies.

You're in the right thread, my friend. I'm in the same boat as you, using this as a desktop replacement with external monitor and mouse and it's still chugging away ~2 yrs later. Got in on the HP dv6 & Touchpad deal shortly after BF, but I don't see much difference between this i5 and the HP's A8 - perhaps overclocking will make a difference, but I'm not an avid gamer so who knows...look around

I am not sure if anyone looks at this thread or not, but if you do, I think the Hard Drive went on my laptop. I am having major problems just trying to boot it up, can anyone tell me the manufacturer of the hard drive so I can download a tool to confirm that is the problem?

Thanks

Your best bet is to look at the hard drive yourself. You never know if I have a Samsung and you have a Western Digital.

My thoughts on this laptop after two years of use. First thing, the laptop has held up fairly well from daily use. Only had to replace the battery a few months ago. The hinges are of poor quality, I have to tighten the screws as it keeps coming lose. The power button does not work in all positions, I have to have the screen opened only a 1/4 of the way in-order for it to turn on, if opened more the button does not respond. I'm missing 5-6 screws on the bottom of the laptop, somehow they became unscrewed and fell out. Performance-wise, it does the all I need for on the go, just wished the build quality was more better.

you might consider putting in an SSD drive while you are at it. One of the best upgrades out there and there have been plenty of deals here. Really easy to do, I've upgraded with 8GB RAM and SSD so the main bottleneck now is the onboard video.

I have had this laptop for a few years now, last year it started to power on sometimes and sometimes not, and the battery was going bad, it kept telling me the to replace the battery, then one day it stopped coming on, the blue charging light has always came on when plugged in, but nothing happens when you push the power button, I dont think it ever powered on without a battery in it but not sure, I just bought a new battery and still nothing, any ideas? Are the power buttons known for going bad or something else? Thanks in advance guys. Also I do have the one with the I5 in it.

just snagged a Dell XPS 15z refurb with the 35% coupon on Monday here http://slickdeals.net/f/4761164-Dell-outlet-coupons-including-35-off-Studio-XPS-and-Studio-No-longer-includes-XPS-or-z?v=1 Time to pack up the Gateway for resale before anything goes bad. I may be pushing my luck judging by the most recent posts. However mine has been perfect and like new since I don't use the battery, screen or keyboard. I'll miss it's but I feel like an i7 with 1080p LED, 8 GB DDR3 and GeForce GT 525M 1GB for $560 is a good step up. Also will get Windows 8 for $15 when it comes out. After resale I'll only be out a few hundred for an even better HTPC that is future proof until the next best thing is affordable.
