Home Depot employee. This is stupid because it happens so rarely. You could walk into any Home Depot and there will be a handful of penny items, but more often they're really, really stupid things that aren't worth a penny. They go to a penny because no one will buy them at $1, $5, $10.

Great penny items that remain on the sales floor are obviously due to a mistake. Don't go into a Home Depot expecting to find great stuff like this. It's 1 in a million. Good luck. Thumbs down because 99.9% of you won't find anything.

I scored an Ideal network/phone crimper for a penny a couple weeks ago, I think it was originally ~$40

I generate a report weekly of everything that goes to a penny. I'm pretty sure I know what I'm talking about.

Another misconception in this thread is that penny merchandise is thrown away or given away. Home Depot now donates penny merchandise to Habitat For Humanity-type non-profits.

What's so wrong with wanting to get a slick deal, and screw over somebody else who needs it more at the same time?

I know this sounds unreal, but I was with someone once who got an entire garage door for a penny. Too bad I didn't need a garage door at the time. Apparently it was just returned.
