Amaryllis - That's a seed pod. You should cut the stem close to the base (be careful not to damage the leaves) so that the plant's energy doesn't go into making seeds. You want the energy to go into producing leaves, which will regenerate the bulb for the following year. Water and fertilize the amaryllis as usual through the summer to give it enough time to replenish nutrients in the bulb. Then when the leaves start to yellow (should happen in early fall, if it doesn't just stop watering and feeding) remove the bulb, cut leaves back to just above the bulb, and gently shake off soil. Store in a cool, dry place for at least 6 weeks. Then you can replant any time. I think it takes about 8 weeks from planting to blooming, although some varieties may vary.

I'm not sure about timing for paperwhites but those principles -- cut back flower stalk to redirect energy to the bulbs, continue care through the summer to replenish nutrients -- should apply to most if not all bulbs.

Sounds about right. I know you can plant them outside for the summer and dig up for the quick hibernation as well.

I feel like such a housewife tonight. Making pickles (B&B half slices from some beautiful .89/lb pickling cukes from Fiddleheads), bathing both dogs, changing the bedding so we can do laundry tomorrow, sorting through stockpile for gifts for a couple of the girls at work, cooking the pork roast for a late dinner for DH and I, and making giftbags with the sewing machine (first time using it ever). Tomorrow I will be making some cookies to bring to work for the night crew (BBQ to celebrate T's 50th birthday) as well as a jar of pickles. So I've got cooking, cleaning and sewing, lol.

lol, we'll just ignore the vacuuming and mopping I could be doing as well.....

Dog one is done, pickles are almost done processing. Dishes are mostly done as well.
And its only a bit past 11pm.

That's a good deal. If only I didn't already have like 4 dozens in my fridge. My mom loves to hoard eggs when she goes to the market.

What do you eat with 4 dozen a week?? We have (turkey bacon) and eggs on Saturday morning. No other eggs unless DD wants egg salad, or I make a quiche, or we bake. Or on those rare occasions when I eat ramen noodles, I always throw an egg and cayenne in them to give some flavor and nutrition.

i hear ya sandy I go thru alot too my kids like eggs almost daily for breakfast. If hubby is home he has 4 eggs too. I will eat 2. Nevermind baking and whatnot. If we have belguim waffles thats 3 more lol. I like to have 3 dozen in the fridge at all times incase we all eat breakfast

yeah, both my DDs love eggs, especially boiled ones. I can't wait to move to a house which has a bigger yard then we can raise our own chicken...hehe..
