Shaw's Supermarket Chat Thread

This thread is being created for the OT chat that goes into the Shaw's Deals thread. We are a chatty bunch and have become an extended family. I heart the OT chat, but agree that sometimes we just want to read about the deals. So hopefully this thread will help decrease the OT in the deals thread and we all have a place to chat with each other.

WOW ! Take a look at this Hall of Shame List - nothing's a deal if it's toxic to your health !!

http://www.ewg.org/cleaners/hallofshame/
Cool seriously just looks like a scare tactic list. While none of the information there is fale, its not very conclusive or 100% truthful.

Heck DHMO is toxic if you consume too much or inhale it as well. But I bet you won't be banning it from your houses....

...today I spent the evening making things. I made mascarpone cheese. Then I made ricotta. Then I made some more ricotta. Then I looked up some videos for the sewing machine since DH misplaced the dang manual and worked my way through three of four bags I cut fabric out for. First one I sewed the strap inside the bag (it said pin to right side of fabric but not which direction to pin it....), second I forgot to clip the outside corners as well as the liner ones (so the lining hovers inside the bigger outside). Third one is about perfect for only spending a day sewing. Handles are usable, lining and outside line up and everything. nod

Gotta say the ricotta was way more payoff for little effort. Milk, buttermilk, cream and about ten minutes of heating gets you lovely curd and another 10-20 of straining gets you lovely yummy cheese. Bought a bunch of clearance organic heavy cream from work so I have some extra to play with.

DHMO=dihydrogen monoxide
http://dhmo.org/
Quote :
Some of the known perils of Dihydrogen Monoxide are:
  • Death due to accidental inhalation of DHMO, even in small quantities.
  • Prolonged exposure to solid DHMO causes severe tissue damage.
  • Excessive ingestion produces a number of unpleasant though not typically life-threatening side-effects.
  • DHMO is a major component of acid rain.
  • Gaseous DHMO can cause severe burns.
  • Contributes to soil erosion.
  • Leads to corrosion and oxidation of many metals.
  • Contamination of electrical systems often causes short-circuits.
  • Exposure decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes.
  • Found in biopsies of pre-cancerous tumors and lesions.
  • Given to vicious dogs involved in recent deadly attacks.
  • Often associated with killer cyclones in the U.S. Midwest and elsewhere, and in hurricanes including deadly storms in Florida, New Orleans and other areas of the southeastern U.S.
  • Thermal variations in DHMO are a suspected contributor to the El Nino weather effect
.
dihydrogen monoxide is of course H2O...Wink

mascarpone cheese recipe I used:
http://alchemybaking.blogspot.com...heese.html

ricotta recipe:
http://www.seriouseats.com/2010/0...d-lab.html
(although I did actually keep it in a pan and not the microwave-I don't have that big of a Pyrex cup and I used buttermilk with a splash of vinegar for the acid)
had this with pasta and sauce and some premade meatballs.....yum.

As for using the whey....I get maybe a tablespoon or two from the mascarpone recipe. Got more from the ricotta. You are supposed to be able to use it for baking bread and such. I let the dogs drink it...lol.

I totally missed that...and of course saw it after I got home and had no way to get out to go shopping. Could have used some socks and a cheap pair of shoes to take the dogs out.....blah.

Such a beautiful day out today. My only day off this week as well. Gonna work on embroidering with the sewing machine, making some smaller bags, and do some gardening. Hoping to get DH up shortly and feed him so he'll babysit the embroidery projects.

Ang I never made it to the store itself but I ordered free shipping to store 2 pairs of sandels for my daughter. I figured it would buy my time to pick them up and atleast I got to use 2 coupons LOL..

I have wide and oddly boned feet, so no shoe shopping without trying them on first. Unless I've bought the exact brand/model before.

Why must it rain all week? Days this week (except tomorrow which is day+evening) and its going to just rain the entire time.....argh. Dh has thurs/fri off and we were hoping to get some gardening and BBQing done Friday, but not in the rain.
But if you want to visit me at work I'll be there from opening til after lunch every day this week til Friday.

Sadly every year we have to opt out of this. I can't trust our mail carrier with my mail...no way am I trusting them with food.....Frown

And last year they didn't even have a donation box at the PO itself. Mad

Sometimes I wish that agencies realized how hard it can be for the average person without kids to donate food without going to a specific store, pantry, etc. Lucky for them I am happy to make the effort.

Sandy, The BTFE site would not have that info. You have to go to your account at http://www.growinglocallearning.com to see your Shaws BT points.
