Shaw's Supermarket Chat Thread

This thread is being created for the OT chat that goes into the Shaw's Deals thread. We are a chatty bunch and have become an extended family. I heart the OT chat, but agree that sometimes we just want to read about the deals. So hopefully this thread will help decrease the OT in the deals thread and we all have a place to chat with each other.

Shaw's is just not innovative and just doesn't seem to care for its customers, I think the major part why it's doom and gloom for them soon. They don't really differentiate their business either and they are charging an arm and a leg for everything. They can't expect to charge people $$$ when they don't cater the service with it... People will just go down the street to the other grocery store. Mom and pop locations even seem more competitive when comparing to Shaw's. Heck even the deals at CVS for soda beats the sales at Shaw's.

They are only doing well in the 2 locations near my house because of its prime location. But one is facing stiff competition from S&S. The other holding its ground but it won't be for long.

I've stopped in a couple times in the past week to scope out markdowns (now that we've a second car again) and no matter the day or time its empty. Weekend or weekday, afternoon or evening...and if people are buying stuff its a couple things. No loaded carts like at MB or even Hannaford.

Heck people buy more groceries at my Target than they do at Shaws. LMAO

But as I mentioned we do have a second vehicle again. DH traded the Escape for a Jeep Wrangler. More than I wanted to spend, more than my car payments (which was also more than I wanted to spend)...but "we talked about it" and with the storm, him working 12hr shifts of overtime and me begging rides from my parents he felt he'd better take it when he saw it since it was a pretty good deal (and from a local dealer thats trustworthy enough). Which makes two vehicles in a row he's bought he's always wanted....I told him next time I am not being thrifty and responsible...I am buying something I will love that will last (since my Passat lasted about 6months). But I do have my car back, which means I can clean it out, and hopefully it will stay that way. And get the brake light issue taken care of without us being without wheels.

purple, yay for a second car!!!!!

Interesting to see the differences from one Shaw's to another. I stopped in the one in Portsmouth and it was completely empty, And they're cranky there, I only stop if Its the last day of a sale and I need something. Shaw's in Biddeford, on the other hand, is awesome -- to a person, they're helpful and smiling there. Prices are good and the grocery manager lets me know about hot deals. I have a personal relationship with most of the employees there. Hannaford here, on the other hand, is a PITA -- employees aren't knowledgeable, you can wait in lines for a long time, they're epensive, they're out of stuff I want, and I rarely see anyone smiling. The Kennebunk one is always busy but that's because they're the only game in town. I prefer to drive an extra 15 minutes to Shaw's, even with today's gas prices.

I stopped at the Westbrook Shaw's today, and they have a front end manager guy there who is always soooooooooooooooo happy, or he puts on a good act. He is so friendly, if a cashier has a question about a coupon or a customer has a question he goes way above and beyond answering it and always with a smile, and he is always so polite. There are many nice cashiers there too, some who could care less, but most are nice. Shaw's needs to take the people from Biddeford and this store in Westbrook and have them train their other workers on customer service.

I don't go out that way too often, but when I do I make sure to shop there, I drove by 2 other Shaw's stores today but didn't feel like dealing with the droopy faces.

You must have heard me realize I forgot carrots. Went out around 5pm to get stew meat, rolls, sandwich bread and carrots. Without a list. I got stew meat, rolls, sandwich bread, eggnog, cheese and butter. And the cheese coupon from the in-store display didn't want to work....and it was super busy...and just as I was gonna pay and go to CS to get my $2 back it went through for her as a vendor coupon. Love my Hannaford, lol.

For those of you who still shop at Hannaford or other fine retailers who carry KerryGold products: there are peelies on some of their cheeses for $2 off butter. The spreadable tub is 3.49 in the great state of ME for an 8oz tub. makes it about $3/lb for tub butter. Which is cheaper than LOL at $4-5/lb regular. And those are hard sticks. Haven't tried it yet, but their cheese is yummy. drool

Only location I know of in which Shaw's does very well is the one at the Pru in Boston and it's that way because it's right in the middle of the city; probably one of the best locations you can get but I know they probably pay up in rent to run that location. Though, I think WF by Mass General still does better but they get a ton of prepared foods business.

I bought some cheese at work when they shipped it by mistake and we sold it dirt cheap.....like 80% or more off. drool I bought half the case for under $5.

I'll have to try and snag a couple spare peelies for you. I've been buying one or two tubs each trip when I see them. I wish we sold the butter at work though.

My other new love is the Yancey's Fancy cheddar cheese curds....yumm. And normally about $2 for a little tub.

I saw a cheese making kit at Stonewall Kitchen the other day for $22. Enough to make 4lbs of mozzarella. Need to make a trip to the health food store in Dover to buy some rennet so I can try my hand at it. This stove heats evenly enough I just might be able to manage...

Had to bump my monkey up to size 4 diapers already, holy crap I have about 23 extra jumbo packs and 1 box of the size 3's, but I was sick of the poopie leaks Wink Think I am going to ask Walgreens if they will exchange their brand one's, with out a receipt. All the others have changed the packaging since I bought them, Huggies pure & natural, regular Huggies, all of the pampers are out of the boxes, and they changed the box count a while ago. I think I have one pack of Huggies I might be able to exchange at WM. I guess the bonus is I could sell them on Craigs list for a bit more than I paid, I think I averaged spending about $2 a pack, for the name brand I could get at least $5, maybe more. I gave a bunch of my size 2 name brands to my cousin, could have made some $, but oh well! And I am back to looking for diaper deals....................... Frown

I think I stocked up on way too much baby food too laugh out loud

Hope everyone is doing well with this crazy weather!!

I remember you socking away all those diapers... you know if you hadn't have bought them then you would have needed them! Maybe had a little peanut that needed the smaller size longer. Murphy's law.

Sell them and treat yourself to something - - you worked hard getting all those diapers.
