Shaw's Supermarket Chat Thread

This thread is being created for the OT chat that goes into the Shaw's Deals thread. We are a chatty bunch and have become an extended family. I heart the OT chat, but agree that sometimes we just want to read about the deals. So hopefully this thread will help decrease the OT in the deals thread and we all have a place to chat with each other.

Ang, thanks for the envelope!!!! You rock!!

Wondering if the girls doing the low carb diets started up again, and how it's going if so? Noungning and Jenny I think? Looking to do something, wondering what you eat for meals and snacks? Looking for ideas Smilie Since having the baby things have been crazy. Losing all the baby weight, plus some, right after having her, then gaining some back a few months later has been sucky Frown We have been purging the freezers of junky stuff though, not bringing to much more in the house, that we'll eat at least, it's a start!
We always are on low carb diets (although this is flexible and depends on the protein and fiber content of foods too). Of course, greek yogurt is great to start the day; full of protein and low in carbs. Stick with chobani or fage.

Nuts are a great option, but stick to the raw ones (I know) with no added salt or oils. Buy trail mix if you don't want to stick with raw nuts for everything you are eating as that can be much more enjoyable. Go to Trader Joe's for a reasonable priced nuts and trail mix. I recommend the ABC mix or the similar almond mango cashew mix.

Stick with peanut butter that says nothing but peanuts on the back (TJ's has the best price on this; I know, but the store is literally a goldmine for nuts).

Instead of ice cream (saying this because it is my favorite dessert item), try substituting frozen greek yogurt or fruit bars (much like Edy's). TJ's has great frozen fruit coconut bars (slightly smaller total package size vs Edy's w/ less but bigger bars at $1.99) that are yummy but still relatively decent on nutritional value. Frozen greek yogurt depends on what you buy; TJ's and Stonyfield are the best choices.

Stick with boneless skinless chicken as opposed to other cuts. Likewise, go for a leaner meat when going for beef. Try the 96% lean ground beef at Hannies (it is $4.69/lb in my area but is worth it and I pass up the $2.99/lb 90% lean at Sam's stuff in favor of that) and sirloin for steak. Fish is always a good choice too, especially with hake being on sale for $3.99/lb (in MA) at Hannaford quite often lately.

I've learned to say no. I've done RA in the past but shopping anymore than CVS just gets too overwhelming for me especially since I split my food shopping amongst primarily TJ's and then Sam's and Hannaford.

I wasn't able to last long this time and need to restart again. It's been stressful so I haven't been able to stick with it. Frown

For low carb, I was doing very low compared to some people... I wanted to lose weight fast and quick. LMAO

Breakfast suggestions, I did variations:
Coffee, 1 half and half, 2 splenda
Bacon - 2-3 slices
Sunny side eggs
Boiled eggs
Frata - Quiche with vegs and stuff
Sausage

Lunch/Dinner:
Stir fry vegs and any kind of meat
Eggplant gratin
Eggplant "lasagna" sans pasta
Spinach salad w/ boiled eggs, sliced almonds, creamy caesar dressing
Buffalo Wings, Wings in general (unbattered grilled/broiled)
Grilled/Broiled steak
Blackened salmon
Creamed spinach
Faux pizza
Zucchini "spaghetti"
Broccoli and cheese

Cook with:
Butter
Olive Oil
Heavy Cream
Cheeses - most except for American Kraft stuff
Almond meal (almond "flour")

Snacks:
Beef jerky
Pork rinds
Almonds - I do flavored ones by Blue Diamond, I bought a load of these when S&S had a CAT deal
Pecans
Macadamia
Dark chocolate squares
Raspberries/Blackberries w/ whipped cream

I actually get bored with the foods and end up stopping the diet completely. I need to find more foods. Pinterest is a good source for low carb food ideas. The low carb diet I was on is low carb, high fat hence all those fatty type foods... but that's how I keep full. If you want to do low carb, low fat, you will be able to do that but you will be finding yourself starving a lot. Also it requires a lot of time to cook everything from scratch and I just don't have the time right now. Frown I am hoping to restart before the year ends though. It's VERY tough the first 2-3 weeks. If you strictly follow the keto diet, your moods swing as well. laugh out loud Bread withdrawal.

take a look at the 17 day diet by dr. mike moreno ~ my SIL and BIL have lost crazy amounts of weight and are having an easy time keepin it off...i just got the book at the library - lean proteins, veggies, yogurt/probiotics, 2 low sugar fruits/day and good fats (olive oil or f1laxseed oil). NO SWEETS, NO ALCOHOL EVER ! that's the tuff part !

oops i take that last part back....eventually u get to have red wine Wink

Lisa, if you're doing MMs at RA or CVS, consider buying nonperishables there. There's a food deal at RA, spend $12 get $3, with some Qs and other MMs could be a decent deal. Includes things like Quaker oats, canned tomatoes, canned fruits & veggies, Progresso soups. Might be some Qs to go with them.

Thanks a bunch for the ideas guys Smilie Thank you so much nungning for typing all that out! Its very helpful to see what others eat on certain diets.

I'm assuming that p90x and insanity are the same thing? DH just borrowed some p90x DVDs from him brother and the box says insanity on it. That's awesome nanners, 25 lbs in a month! I don't know if I can do a work out of that intensity though, I'd have to check with my doctors. I agree Lisa, time is so crazy lately. It would probably kick my butt too!

I'm considering doing weight watchers on my own again, or low carb. I'm with you noung, I get bored of eating the same foods. Got bored on ww because I was eating then same stuff so not to use too many points. Last time I lost about 55lbs pretty quick, I'm almost scared to do it quick again, because I really want it to stay off this time Smilie I think really low carb makes me nervous, I like a lot of the veggies and fruits that have carbs, and I like full fat cheeses laugh out loud and 1% milk.

17 day diet, not sure if I have read about that one, will have to look into it. There was a lady on Dr. Oz recently I think it was called the digest diet, sounded somewhat doable. I almost don't want to do a diet, just because diets don't work! I need to find something that I can do long term, work into every day life. But at the same time, I don't feel like I can do it on my own, so maybe the 17 day or digest, where they are books that I can go to when I feel like I need the support would be helpful.

Thanks again guys Smilie

Honestly Liz, she cant do the whole thing and she is still on the first dic. She has a rotator cuff problem on her right shoulder so has to be careful of that. She has always carried more weight in her hips and thighs so it was awesome that it came off where she wanted. She is 39 and still hasnt quit smoking so I am sure some of it is pretty tough on her. And I am sure that she is in the same issue with all moms with young kids...when to find the time, etc when the kids are not trying to "do it" with her.

On really low carb, you can have all the vegetables you want as long as they aren't root vegetables. For example: 4 cups of spinach = 4g carbs - 3g fiber = 1g net carbs, so that only counts as 1. I found myself eating A LOT of broccoli. I at LOTS of cheese too. Most of my sauces were cream based. Like Alfredo sauce for my proteins. Milk will be a problem... most people stick to Almond Milk or Coconut Milk but I've never tried them myself. Fruits will be the problem, fruits are high in carbs and doesn't have high fiber. But the berries are higher in fiber. Smilie

I've learned so much doing the low carb diet because I have to read everything, all labels and the carb count - fiber etc. Such as buying low-fat is a big no-no because they replace the fat with sugar so it's higher in carb count since there's more sugar. Frown Most stuff I ate was full fat. If you want to do any diet, you just have to be really mindful of things like I can have a piece of sweet now (for me on low carb would be a piece of dark chocolate), it also means I probably can't have a cup a berries with whipped cream. You just have to weigh out what would you rather have, the 1 cup of berries w/whipped cream or the 1 piece of chocolate that equals the same amount of carbs etc.

I had to do a lot of compare and contrast when I wanted 1 piece of choco to 1 handful of almonds. The one piece would satisfy my need, but the 1 handful of almonds would probably help me get full. Smilie

I use myfitnesspal to keep track of food and see how many net carbs things are. You should try using that to track food if you don't want to pay for WW.
