A "Hey I just watched a movie" thread

12,438 1,117 April 23, 2010 at 06:49 PM
One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

Haunt - See this is what makes me wonder why I keep letting waifu choose movies. Any way basic evil house story with one nice twist that redeems it somewhat. No real tension besides the accustomed jump scares. 5/10
In our house we have veto power over each others movie choice. There's the 'Want to watch it but not in the mood tonight veto' and the 'Not that fussed on watching it veto'. The person whose movie gets the latter veto, has to watch the movie later on their own. Problem solved.

I usually just let her pick, once in a while she picks something so bad she actually apologizes and tells me to put something else on.
Her problem is she loves horror movies and tends to try and see them all.
But that is what love is. heart Watching crappy movies with my waifu.

laugh out loud Not me, I check them out on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes first if it's something I don't already know about. DH likes a lot of violent action movies with car chases and I just don't like that sort of thing usually. So he watches them on his own later.

Need For Speed - plot was a bit weak and haven't we all seen the "you're neck deep in debt so you're going to have to do something major against your better judgment to get out" plots and this movie is no different. I actually enjoyed this movie as the cars were spectacular and there was more racing than Fast and Furious. It sticks to racing with some homages to the video game. Aaron Paul admittedly mails it in on this one as there is little for him to do.

August: Osage County - Should be renamed 5 Angry Women: Boring as Fark.

D-Day's Sunken Secrets - Fantastic. Explores in depth (pun intended) the battle of Normandy and how much technical planning and effort went into it. Talks with vets and takes them down to explore the wrecks of their vessels and let's them tell their stories. Incredible stuff. I wanted it to be longer but its great. Smilie

Pacific Rim - 5/5 - This is one of my new favorite movies. The special effects were amazing, hate I didn't see it in 3D. I will admit, the idea of 2 pilots joining minds to control the robots was a bit silly, but I still loved the movie.

Hercules - I guess the going Hollywood strategy is to re-imagine familiar tales and put more human and realistic spins to them and this movie is no different. Much like Maleficent in the telling to give Hercules an aura yet relatable at the same time. Pretty easy on the eyes and fun enough to watch. It didn't stand out but it didn't suck either.

Guardians of the Galaxy -- I don't know why this is getting such great reviews. I saw the trailer a couple months ago and thought it was lame. Then a bunch of great reviews came out, so I figured the rest of the movie was not lame. But, nope, still kind of lame. The jokes are flat, the rest of the dialogue is uninspired, and pretty much the only time I cared about any of the characters is near the end when one actually does something heroic.

Troll Hunter -- shaky cam fake-documentary movie about hunting giant trolls in Norway. Surprisingly entertaining.

Still Mine -- Story of a guy building a small house on his property in rural America to better take care of his ailing wife. He then finds out you need to buy $400 building permits, submit building plans, use stamped wood, etc, and that if you don't pay those fees the government will threaten you with bulldozing down your personal dwelling on your own property even if it is built better than the building code requires. Slow and good drama, and a reminder that in The Land of The Free you aren't allowed to tell the government to get off your lawn.

Non-stop - This is no Taken but still a good thriller. Yes, there are a lot of plot holes but it still kept me engaged all throughout. 7/10

Bad Words - Good fun. Really liked it!

Triangle - Definitely a mindfark of a film leaving plenty of net inquires as to what it was about. *Spoiler*

The Other Woman - Boring and completely unfunny.

Let's Be Cops - Probably a Redbox rental regardless of the early on box office surge. Nothing about the movie was original and nothing about it hasn't been done in bits and pieces of other movies. It had its moments but if you want a better yet similar movie, go see Blue Streak.

Lucy - all of the good effects are in the trailer. It goes from an interesting premise to a literal artistic Cannes Film Festival blah blah blah after a while. With its premise, it could have hosted a lot more and squeezed in so much it's unreal, perhaps create a superhero franchise with it, but it turns into some preachy nonsense. Redbox it with a free rental if you have it. Don't spend the $1.99 or whatever to watch it.

Insomnia - Directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Al Pacino and Robin Williams. Great thriller with a Twin Peaks-esque feel to it. Cinematography was amazing! Williams can do drama and this is one of his best movies

I loved it but I am a comic book nerd and knew the characters before hand. Very well done and opens up the Marvel cosmicverse.
