So, the below is what I have worked up so far. This is a work in progress and now I am looking for corrections/input/suggestions.

For example, what other information is wanted or what information included below is not wanted.

========================================

ink/toner cartridge recycling primer/faq for Office Depot / OfficeMax and Staples (vers. 2016.05.20)

  • Office Depot / OfficeMax:
    • Recycle:
      • Value: Up to 200 rewards points per cartridge recycled -- see purchase requirement below.
      • Limit: 10 per calendar month - no per day restriction.
      • Type: Ink or toner cartridge -- all brands -- OD/OM does not accept damaged cartridges for recycling.
    • Purchase requirement:
      • To qualify to recycle for a month, qualified purchases of $10 or more must be made in that month.
      • Qualifying purchases exclude taxes; delivery fees; postage stamps; gift and prepaid cards; and purchases made with Office Depot or OfficeMax Rewards and Merchandise Cards/Certificates.
    • Recycling Rewards:
      • Issued:
        • Recycling rewards points are paid out monthly together with purchase (standard and bonus) rewards points in the form of a Rewards Certificate.
        • Rewards points are paid out in 1000 point increments.
        • 1000 points equals $10.
        • Rewards Certificates are made available within 30 days after the end of the month in which the rewards points are earned. To date this has meant sometime in the latter half of the month.
        • Unpaid out points carryover from month to month until the end of the quarter when they expire.
      • Usage: Rewards certificates may be redeemed on purchases (excluding all gift and prepaid cards) at Office Depot or OfficeMax US stores (including Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands), online or by phone.
      • Expiration:
        • Official: 60 days after the date of issuance.
        • Effective: The last day of the month 2 months following the month in which they are issued at 11:59 PM Eastern (daylight savings observed).

    • Purchase requirement
      • $30 in ink/toner purchases in the past 180 days.
    • Recycling rewards:

      • Usage: Recycling rewards -- and purchase rewards -- are redeemable for most merchandise in Staples stores, online at staples.com(R) or by phone at 1-800-333-3330 but cannot be redeemed for or applied against taxes, cash, credit remittance, delivery charges, custom printing orders placed online, promotional products, any purchases made on print.staples.com, documents.staples.com, staplespromotionalproducts.com, staplescustomprinting.btobsource.com, shopstaplesmobile.com, appcenter.staples.com, Staples gift cards, third-party gift cards, prepaid phone cards, postage stamps, prior purchases, Staples Industrialsm purchases or any purchases made on other provider Web sites.

FAQ section (vers. 2016.05.20):

Q. Do you have to recycle or make a qualified purchase first? (OD/OM)

A. It does not matter.

Q. Do you have to recycle and make a qualified purchase monthly for Office Depot's Rewards program?

A. Three key points:

--- Qualified purchases of $10 or more in a month are required to allow recycling rewards points to be earned for that month.
--- Rewards points are paid out in 1000 point increments.
--- Unpaid out points carry over from month to month until the end of the quarter when they expire.

Here is an example:

January: Make qualified purchases of $10 or more and recycle 7 carts earning 1400 rewards points. Payout of $10 for January (made in February). The remaining 400 rewards points are carried over to February.

February: Do not make a qualified purchase of $10 or more so not qualified to earn recycling rewards points. 400 rewards points carried over to March.

March: Make qualified purchases of $10 or more and recycle 9 carts earning 1800 rewards points. Payout of $20 (2000 points: 400 carried over plus 1600 earned in March) (made in April). The remaining 200 rewards points expire at the end of quarter.

Q. Where can I get used ink/toner cartridges?

A. Family and friends, neighbors, thift shops, garage/rummage sales, and of course like everything else, eBay.

Q. If I purchase an item with rewards will that purchase count my purchase requirement for recycling?

A. No, to the extent the purchase was paid for with rewards it will not count as a qualifying purchase for the purpose of the recycling purchase requirement.

Q. If I purchase an item with rewards will I earn the standard purchase rewards?

A. No, items purchased with rewards do not qualify as qualifying purchases for the purpose of earning standard purchase rewards.

Q. If I purchase an item that earns a bonus/special reward (100% back in rewards if item X is purchased, $Y back if item Z is purchased) and I purchase that item with rewards, will I receive the bonus/special reward?

A. No, to the extend paid for with rewards (or coupons for that matter).

Requesting advice from bpvh/OM gurus:

I just went to the OM store near me to recycle cartridges. The cashier told me that they are no longer doing the recycling rewards, instead they are following a model where you get instant $1 off on what you purchase for every cartridge up to 20 per month.

I called OM perks CSR, they seemed confused. A rep said they will check and get back to me. I received an email later saying the store has implemented this policy.

Is this something new?
bvph has posted at post 595 and explained this new program for trial markets. Which State are you located, i want to know if OM has expanded their trial markets.
OfficeMax's MaxPerks Rewards program is trial marketing several new recycling offers.

While the existing program is up to 10 carts per month, $2 per cart, paid via rewards the new trial programs are:

up to 10 carts per month, $1 per cart, paid via in-store coupon that has to be used that same day
"*Effective 9/16/12, save $1 instantly on your same-day in-store transaction for each qualifying cartridge, up to a maximum of $10 in savings per calendar month per member."
up to 20 carts per month, $1 per cart, paid via in-store coupon that has to be used that same day
"**Effective 9/16/12, save $1 instantly on your same-day in-store transaction for each qualifying cartridge, up to a maximum of $20 in savings per calendar month per member."
there might be others

Apparently, to find out if you are in a trial market, log into your rewards account and view the "Recycling Program" page. If the old terms are there it appears you are not in a trial. If a trial's terms are there, it appears you are in a trial.

For those in a trial program, please let OfficeMax/MaxPerks know that the trial program terms are an unwelcome change from the old terms. Do not let this pass without comment.

TERMS:

*Effective 9/16/12, save $1 instantly on your same-day in-store transaction for each qualifying cartridge, up to a maximum of $10 in savings per calendar month per member. Qualifying cartridges are any visibly undamaged ink/toner cartridges. Excludes remanufactured cartridges of any brand. Qualified items and the degree of damage are determined by OfficeMax at its sole discretion. While there is no limit to the number of ink or toner cartridges you may recycle, you will only receive a discount for the qualifying items and limited quantity noted. Discount valid on regular, sale, promotional and/or clearance priced items. Not valid on purchases of HP and EPSON ink/toner cartridges, gift cards, general-use prepaid cards, phone cards, Virgin Mobile devices, US postage stamps, shredding services, MaxAssurance(R), Ctrlcenter(R), OfficeMax Essentials Kits, assembly or FedEx(R) shipping services. Void where prohibited. Cannot be combined with any other coupon, associate discount, OfficeMax(R) Customer Perks and/or Retail ConnectSM pricing. Not valid on prior purchases or for credit card payments. No cash or credit back.

Thanks Andy11. I'm in CA. This is what my MaxPerks account states when I click on "Recycling Program" tab, so according to bpvh's post I am not in a trial market, correct? The cashier was not willing to even try scanning my MP card.
[quote]MaxPerks members can earn $2 in rewards for each qualifying_ visibly undamaged, originally manufactured, ink or toner cartridges of any brand by bringing them to any OfficeMax retail store location. Simply present your MaxPerks ID when submitting cartridges to ensure you receive credit and your rewards will be issued in the next statement cycle along with any other MaxPerks rewards you may have earned during the same period. You can earn up to $20 in rewards per calendar month per member (from 10 ink/toner cartridges). While there is no limit to the number or brand of ink/toner cartridges you may recycle, you will only receive rewards for the qualifying_ items and limited quantity noted. The total amount of your recycling rewards issued cannot exceed your total qualified* purchase amount in your MaxPerks account.

They implemented this new policy in certain test markets (California, Denver, a few other cities) in mid June.

So even if my maxperks account shows the original recycling program, it is no longer honored, correct? Well that is sad. Mad

Is it possible to buy 100% back in rewards item and use the ink recycling coupon without affecting the rewards?

Well that is excellent news! All we need to do is organize members in those states to go into their local stores and go completely APE SHIT like Will Ferrell auditioning for a movie. Shove over the displays. "What? WHAT? No more ink rewards?! WHAT?! Ill stab your father!" Try and set something on fire. Urinate indiscriminately, etc. So when the test review board looks over the results of their policy change they really have something to think about.

For the week of 7/21/13, they had a deal where you paid $46.99 for a case of paper and you got $42 rewards back. I recycled 20 ink carts, used an OD 20% off coupon and rewards for one case, and got the full $42 rewards back.

That's expected, though, since it was fixed value rewards. I did the same and received the full amount. Now, the question is what happens in 100% back or 1c after rewards situations with the instant recycling credit. Since the ink recycling is added as a coupon, there's a good chance that the rewards amount will be reduced. So far, I haven't seen any posts indicating whether this is true or not.

With my limited experience with the new ink recycle program, I would not recycle ink carts when buying 1c or 100$ back rewards items. When I did the recycle in July and this month, the cashier scaned the UPC for recycle but the register showed $0.00 for each cart. In both cases, the manager had to price adjusted my purchase down by $20. If I were buying 100% or 1c rewards item, I would have wasted my ink carts.

I was told it is an instant in store credit - don't know what that means.

Attached is part of my transaction done in July. $0.00 credit for each ink cartridge but the paper is marked down by the 20% coupon and $20 for the ink cart recycle.

For those in the test market, instant discount from recycling ink is treated as a coupon.

Rewards are reduced (for 1 cent/100%back items ) if you if you apply ink recycling credit/instant discount towards the purchase.

Also if you make a return items that were discounted from recycling ink, you lose the discount when returning.

***please note this only applies to those in the test market***

Thanks for posting. Were you told about these (reduction of 100% or 1c rewards and losing ink credit with a return), or experienced it yourself?

Regarding Staples ink purchase, do I need to buy all $30 worth of ink in one purchase or I can spread the purchase across several days and the 6 months count once I reach $30.
Also is $30 before or after taxes?
