Trek Vs. Schwinn Bikes?

EasyGuy 1,798 June 29, 2010 at 07:04 PM
I want to get a hybrid bike (comfort/road bike) and I'm interested in these two bikes. One is a Trek 7100 and the other one is a Schwinn Avenue Hybrid Bike. I can get a used Trek 7100 for $175 around my area, but it is used, that is about half the price of MSRP. I can get a new Schwinn from Walmart for $199 before tax. I want to know if it is worth it to get the Trek even though it is used or buy the new Schwinn? The first picture is a Schwinn and the second is the Trek.

compare the type of gears...how many speeds...type of brakes...weight of the bike...quality of rims

I can't comment on the Schwinn, but I can say that I love my Trek hybrid. It's similar, 7200.3 or something like that.

General comments that are probably obvious.... first, if you are thinking of getting the used bike, make sure that it's the right size for you (obvious I know, but worth saying). And second, as pointed out by Mugen910, check for wear and quality and everything. You can ask how many miles are on it, but unless he has a speedometer it's unlikely that he will know.

On my Trek, the cables for brakes and derailleur run exposed on the underside of the frame. Worth checking them to make sure they're not rusted, partially cut, etc.

You might want to get a tuneup on the used bike if you get it, so obviously the less things there are to adjust/fix, the better. Check the derailleur (shifter) to make sure it shifts cleanly, ask if the brake pads have been replaced or not so you can get a feel for how old they are... look for obvious signs of trauma to the frame, see if the seat is comfortable for you (when I got my Trek bike, I was allowed to try different seats and swap out for no additional charge, but obviously you can't do that with a used bike).

Just pay attention to detail, and then decide if you want to gamble on used.

As I said, I love my Trek hybrid, but can't comment on Schwinn. Sorry I can't give any insight on the brand differences.

I would go for the used Trek. Schwinn used to be a pretty good bike company, but I think the quality of the Schwinn (any brand) bikes sold at the big box store (wal-mart, K-mart) is pretty bad (components and the experience of the people putting them together). Often, bike store would recommend replacing the big box store bikes than investing the money in a tune up. Some won't even work on them.

I think Treks are only sold by reputable bike store.

I agree with the above statement.

Iagree No matter whose name is on the box, its not a good idea to buy a bike from Walmart. Shoddy components and the bike was probably put together by somebody with little to no training. What happens when your Walmart bike breaks down? Walmart is not going to work on it and bike shops won't want to touch it either.

Verify the Trek is in good working order... (peddle around a bit in each of the gears)... and get yourself a quality used bike.

If the Trek is in good condition buy it. Not a whole lot goes wrong with low mileage bicycles. It's a lot like buying a one y/o car with 10,000 miles on it.
A new $175.00 bike is going to have crappy components & probably will weigh a lot more.
