Folks, I am in the market for a new plasma. Wondering which one to go for, the TCP50X1 or the Samsung 50 inch plasma with FREE Home theater system. Both are tempting deals....however unable to make up my mind Smilie

Panasonic 50 inch plasma(TCP50X1): http://accessories.us.dell.com/sn...u=A2612466

Samsung 50 inch plasma(PN50BHTZ320):http://accessories.us.dell.com/sn...u=A3256426

Your insight will be highly appreciated as I am a little confused on which one to go for.

Thanks!!

I finally got the cable box fiasco straightened out (when I picked it up, they didn't include a power cable or a coax cable). I went straight to the HD channels and found myself a little disappointed. Out of the 40 or so channels I flipped through, only about 3 of them had that WOW! factor...the rest were either pretty fuzzy or looked like what happens when I turn the sharpness all the way up on my old tv. Please tell me this is a Comcast problem and not some setting on the TV. A quick look at the standard definition channels was nearly unwatchable.

Also, I put Planet Earth in the HT for my daughter to see and it looked pretty fuzzy too as opposed to last night when it looked pretty good. So either I messed up a setting unknowingly or my tired eyes last night were way more forgiving.

By the way, I have not calibrated the settings to what the wiki shows and everything is connected up with HDMI.

I have dish but I am sure cable boxes are similar in that they have settings in them to verify the quality output of the tv, eg. 1080i, 720p and so on. Maybe double check those settings?
And btw, calibration can significantly change appearance, may want to investigate that more.

I'll be the first to admit I start to hyperventilate when I see more than one wire/cord/plug so I have Zipinstallation coming on Saturday to mount the bracket in the corner on the wall (and they'll warranty the installation for 2 years so if it falls off, it's on their dime not mine). They'll hook up the HD cable box (gotta go to the cable office tomorrow to swap out the existing box), the dvd/vhs player, Wii, and the HTiB. Price was $381 for "Basic Wall Mounted TV Setup and Installation" which lists for $249.95 and includes -

• install pre-purchased on wall mounting bracket to standard wood, masonry or drywall and mount TV on bracket
• connect 3 video components (such as an HD cable box, dvd player, etc) to your newly installed TV
• cover cables with paintable molding
• make sure everything is working properly
• show you how to use your newly installed television
• clean up, remove all packaging materials from your home
• provide you with a 2 year warranty on workmanship

Also includes the Home Theater Setup which lists for $199.00 and includes
• connect your pre-purchased home theater speakers and subwoofer
• connect up to 3 video components (like HD cable box, DVD player, gaming system, etc) to your A/V Receiver
• make sure all of your components are working properly
• show you how to use your new system
• clean up, remove all packaging materials from your home and neatly organize all cables
(Doesn't include speaker mounting or wire concealment)

Will see how horrific the wires look before I decide to let them cut holes in my knotty pine walls!

The same work from the Geek Squad at Best Buy was about $100 more. I know most of you are doing this work yourself and I'm envious but I know my limitations so it is what it is.

Got the wall mount (articulating, tilting) from Monoprice as well as the HDMI cables and TOSLINK.

Wondering, did anyone decide to get an all-in-one remote or are you finding the Sammy remote to be sufficient????

How have you guys been able to get 5.1 sound out of the ps3?

My current setup - HT to TV via hdmi and toslink. Time Warner hd cable box to TV via hdmi. PS3 to TV via HDMI.

Do i need to connect toslink from ps3 to HT? then set the audio output to be through toslink on the ps3?

spend a bit time to set the TV up this afternoon for upconverting DVD player(HDMI1), Wii (component), HD OTA (my HDTV tuner was broken, so get the antenna signal directly into the TV using its internal tuner, which works just fine), and my new built PC via HDMI 2. The picture looks great, better than expected. no dead pixel found so far, very happy. will try to get an optical cable to get the TV audio out to the amplifier to see how it works later on... The TV set is damn heavy.

1. You don't need to, I was happy with Toslink from TV to PS3 until I found out I wasn't getting true surround sound. Now I have the PS3 connected directly to HTS and get true 5.1. It's noticeably better, especially for movies. I (and others) have posted a link to two different splitters that can be used to connect up to 3 devices to the HTS in the past 10 pages of this thread.

2. Yes, set the PS3 to the top selection which says something about Dolby 5.1 and Optical Audio. Also turn on the HTS and keep hitting the "Aux" button until you see "Digital In" on the display of the HTS.

Something's wrong. Try the calibration settings here: http://reviews.plasmatvbuyingguid...ation.html

It's by far the best I've tried. I fell in love all over again with this TV last night when I tried these.

Anyone have any suggestions for a intergrated mount tv stand? I'm looking for something that will sit up a little higher and will have shelves for ps3, etc.

Also, since I'll admit to not exactly knowing what I'm doing, can someone help me make sure I'm on the right page? I've got the tv, ps3, DirectTv, and the HT. Also wouldn't mind being able to hook up to my computer. Here's what I think I need to optimally connect everything.

1-HDMI DVI Tin-Plated Copper CL2 Rated (For In-Wall Installation) Cable (24AWG) - 25ft

2-High Speed HDMI 1.3a Category 2 Certified CL2 Rated (In-Wall Installation) Cable (24AWG) w/ Net Jacket - 5ft (Gold Plated Connectors) - BLACK

1-3X1 Optical Audio Toslink Bi-Directional Manual Switch

4-PREMIUM 3FT Optical Toslink Cable w/ Metal Fancy Connector

Is this correct? TIA!

Really? I didn't like these settings compared to the one posted directly on the Wiki. Maybe I'll try these again.

So does anyone know what the all-time record is for a slickdeals thread? We've got to at least be coming close with over 3.5k posts, lol.

I've only got about 300 posts, but I'd be willing to bet at least 1/3 of those are in this thread...
