Has anyone dealt with Staples rewards Theft??

205 28 July 17, 2010 at 12:02 PM in Question
Ok, so I have been turning in ink cartridges to staples for a while now, and have received rewards since February I believe, and I have never been able to use them except one. I usually waited til the last day before they expired and then they wouldnt work when using them online or in store they wouldnt work, so i just figured i missed my chance, and would try again next month (i know, not the smartest approach, but thats a different issue).

Anyway, since I kept having non-stop problems with my rewards, I just logged onto my account to check my status on rewards.. Well apparently, EVERY single one of my rewards was redeemed in New York by somebody buying external hard drives both times. One was in Staten Island and the other in Selden... The problem here is that I am from Indiana, and have never been to New York in my life.. Now I dont know if 'New York' shows up if you buy online, or if someone guessed my rewards account number, because I keep my computer clean and scan it constantly for everything, and have never posted any information anywhere.. I cant call the rewards people til Monday to figure this out.. Do you think they will credit me with any of these rewards, or am I screwed?

So has anyone else had this happen, or did i win the unlucky lottery again? lol

You could start doing it yourself if you had a free 5min of time. That's how bad this is with no end in sight.

Just lost a Quickbooks $100 gift check. I am in Connecticut, but it was apparently used by someone in California.

What they really need to do is eliminate the emailed rewards, and go back to mailed ones. That would basically make this type of theft impossible, although I guess they could still be used online.

I don't understand why they can't come up with an algorithm that isn't so easy for thieves to crack.

It's also annoying for me because I used to buy these on eBay (a long time ago, before they were being stolen). Even though they say no transfers, I never had a moral problem with it because I was buying people's rewards they didn't want at a discount, no different really than buying gift cards on eBay. But now that I know that thieves are stealing these, I can no longer buy these on eBay, as I have no way of knowing who is selling their legitimate rewards that they don't want and who is stealing other people's rewards and selling those.

While searching for a phone number, I came acrossthis page [hubpages.com]. Now, this makes it VERY easy for the crooks to collect any necessary information to steal rewards checks (not that it is that hard to begin with) OMG

It may have been an honest mistake.

I had my rewards check of about $10 scan as someone else's $30, leaving a balance. For a few minutes I was telling the cashier and then the manager that it does not make sense and it is like stealing but they didn't seem to care and I did not have time to stay longer as I had to run.

If a guy purchased photo paper, it probably has a rebate and was a filler for a coupon, in which case they have his address (rebate).

My best guess is that there was an issue with the barcode either (a) as entered by Staples or (b) printed from your printer or (c) scanned at store.

In my case the $10 was lef tover from a previous transaction and code may have been printed improperly at checkout or ruined while riding in my pocket. It scanned without any issues though.

Had 4 rewards stolen/used, all used in New York at different Staples (Porchester, Larchmont, and Hauppauge). Looks like they were using $25 off coupons too because the amounts were just enough to put them over the limit. Never gave away my pword to anyone.

ugh, I just had another check stolen; $20; used in Elmsford N.Y. Looks like I cannot store up my checks and use them on larger items or they get stolen. I am going to go and spend my last three checks and delete all my staples accounts and start over with one new account in my name with a new password and see what happens. When my check gets stolen again I am going to ream staples out till I get my check replaced and I am going to make a huge stink about it with them.

P.S. I have rebuilt my computer from scratch with a new OS since the last time I had a shit load of checks stolen so it isn't an information stealing virus either, oh and I had changed my passwords...

IMO staples employees are stealing peoples checks.

P.S. going to report them to BBB and reseller ratings right now as well; didn't think of it last time, lol.
