easiest way to port my phone number to ooma

niceperson77 3,493 498 August 3, 2010 at 09:34 PM
right now i have att landline and dsl coming through the same line. when i go to the ooma website to order number porting it says:

"If your DSL service is delivered on the same line as your phone service, you must separate the two before you transfer your phone number. Ask your current provider for "stand-alone" or "dry-loop" DSL. Failure to separate the two services will result in the loss of your DSL/Internet service after your port completes."

so how can i seperate my dsl and phone number while still preserving my phone number until ooma can port it? if i get dryloop internet right now and cancel my landline will att hold my phone number?

Hey OP,

No matter what, the phone company will probably screw something up.

If you try to drop the phone service, your phone number will either be lost or tied to your DSL service with no phone.

I suggest you order a second "stand alone" DSL service installed. I know it sounds nuts, but you want to keep your phone number, right? After installation of the second DSL line, move your system (and Ooma) to the secondary DSL service and start the porting process with Ooma. In approximately three weeks, your number will be ported, your primary DSL service will be dead and your secondary DSL service will become your primary DSL service. Then call your phone company and tell them you want to drop all service connected to your primary DSL service. And you should be left with a "stand alone" DSL service, Ooma and your original telephone number.
