'last chance' in that as the article argues, those they betray will likely formalize a new party, maybe/maybe not under the Tea Party banner, forever leaving the GOP out of office, as most (although not all) membership and support of this new party will be drawn from the GOP, leaving them a rump party consisting mostly of socialists-lite

Split the GOP and you'll get more liberals in power.
The “vice of specialization†entails the denial of intellect. “It is a denial because it rests on the superstition that understanding is identical with professional skill. The universal formula is: ‘You cannot understand or appreciate my art (science) (trade) unless you practice it.’ †- Jacques Barzun |

As far as presidency, i think it will take longer before people get out of the D/R duopoly..but I think the house and senate can get there sooner than later....so while the president might be Rep, the Reps will not have enough for a majority in the house and senate unless they form an alliance with the Conservative Party, which will force the GOP more to the right than it has been the past 10 years or so, at least fiscally. |

The only thing worse than suffering through the success of the opposition, is suffering through the opposition remaining in power while an inter-party crisis takes place on your own side. You'll want it over ASAP. Conservatives are weary of change, and the idea that conservatism advances via a revolution that destroys the political party of conservatism seems somehow counter intuitive to me... and quite radical. What we need is a new conservative synthesis to gain a foothold among some intellectuals and then a Republican candidate to come along who can articulate that synthesis effectively. Possibly this could also appear in the guise of one person, but people that gifted are extremely rare. |
