Why am I gaining weight???NO OT if you please.

373 253 August 12, 2010 at 03:30 AM
Back in late May/early June I decided to go on a diet. Not only to lose weight but to learn to eat a little healthier since my diet was consistent on a lot of fried foods and soda and junk. I tried NutriSystem and found their food was pretty gross and I couldn't eat it so I am currently doing a Lean Cuisine type of diet.

My menu consists of a Lean Cuisine breakfast, lunch and dinner. They're generally around 230-300 calories each meal. I have a small snack in between each one. Breakfast is fruit snack, and lunch is a Nabisco 100 calorie pack of some type and then my dinner snack is a Skinny Cow ice cream (150 calories, low fat). This puts me at a bit below 1500 calorie intake daily. I drink water all day and the only downside is that I don't have much time to excersize so I only do about 15 minutes a day.

In the beginning things were great and I lost 30 pounds. I am nowhere near my goal and I've slowly started to put back a pound a week or so over the past 3 weeks. I don't understand why my weight is creeping back up and why I'm not continuing to lose weight. I have a lot lot more to go and shouldn't have reached a plateau this quickly and surely shouldn't be gaining it back....

It's really stressing me out, since I started this diet I've been obsessing about my weight and feel like I'm failing somewhere but can't figure out where...Any thoughts would be appreciated so I don't fall off my diet and give up...

Bump the excercise up to 20 minutes a day (try a few weights if you don't already..you can use a full milk jug in a pinch, lol) Even gaining a little muscle can help a LOT in weight loss, because your muscles are burning calories continuously (even when you sleep). Lifting dumbbells (bicep and shoulder exercise) and doing squats and pushups gives you a good cardio workout as well as building muscle, which will speed up your metabolism.

Water is also crucial to weight loss. If you don't get enough your body tends to "hold on" to it which can result in excess water weight. Make sure you drink plenty every day.

If none of this works, I suggest a low carb regime like Atkins. That's the only thing that works for me..You don't need to deprive yourself of fatty foods. On the contrary, the more fat, the better it works (as long as you eliminate the carbs). As counterintuitive as it sounds, it is proven to work for most people who try it and stick to it. It's also freakin delicious. Smilie

I was thinking to try a low carb diet instead, maybe I will try that. I will also see if the change in excersize helps. As for the water I drink about five 8-oz bottles a day right now. I can try to up that but I hate water..blech...

It's hard to keep motivated when the loss has stopped and the gaining has come back. I was doing really well while losing the 30 I'm down because each step on the scale made me smile..now I want to smash the thing through the window.

I totally agree with Libertarian about the water. So important.

Also most frozen meals are super high in sodium which could help you hold onto water weight....do you think that might be happening here?

More water and more fiber. Also add more vegetables. Those will help.

Also, even if you can make 20 mins a day to walk or something, it will help quite a bit. Another idea is eat smaller meals spread throughout the day. That will keep your metabolism going.

Good luck!

I'm going to try all of these suggestions and also one my DH suggested..dont step on the scale everyday. He says I should only step on it once a week but I find myself checking my weight 2-3 times a day. So I'm going to try to only step on it one time per week. I'm making myself crazy.

Any type of "processed" food is going to sabotage your diet. Lean Cuisine has high sodium, others have high carbs plus you need to watch the fat count in all of them. Another thing is you have to watch "hidden" calories!

In order to lose weight, you are going to have to make several lifestyle changes.

Exercise! No diet works without exercise, if you don't break sweat for 30 minutes a day you will have a hard time losing weight. Exercises such as running, skipping rope, sit ups, push ups, elliptical training machines, etc. ...... anything that has you sweating and heart pounding.

Cut out crap in your diet! For breakfast have a small bowl of plain oatmeal. For lunch have an apple or couple of celery stalks. For dinner have a small steam cooked chicken breast (no butter) or a grilled chicken salad (no dressing) with a small serving of low sodium vegatables. If you getting hungry between meals, have stalk of celery and then exercise 5 minutes longer than normal.

Drink water! Eight (8 oz.) classes of water every day!

No alcohol! Sorry.

Log everything! Write down everything you eat or drink including when and how much. Write down the exercises you do and the length of time devoted to each. Then once or twice a week, review your log and make sure you are not cheating!

I was talking to my husband last night about really changing my diet and going with something like this but we started asking ourselves how people who are not overweight ever eat anything...like if you go to any fast food restaurant there are skinny people there and they're eating normal food. At my work everyone eats normal things and they all are not overweight...so why is it that I have to consume next to nothing to notice a minimal weight loss. Is it that my metabolism is dead compared to the general population? How am I ever supposed to eat normally again or is that not ever going to be an option for me? I am eating so much less right now than what I see the world around me eating and yet I'm going nowhere..that's the frustrating part.

I put on talk shows and you see overweight people there and they list their diet of 5 pizzas a day, burgers, fries, shakes, gallons of soda and they dont weigh THAT much more than me. I sometimes get to the point where if this is going to be sooo much of a struggle to just be a healthy weight that it'd be easier just to be fat and happy eating what I want.

Just venting..sorry..

more than likely you lost a lot of water weight in the beginning. thats why it came off so quick. if you keep eating like you are and exercise a little the weight will continue to drop. its crucial that you get some exercise though.

Don't get discouraged. The more you lose, the harder it is to lose the rest. When you first start out, your body requires more calories to maintain your weight. As you lose weight, your body requires fewer calories to maintain your current weight.

Think of it as the law of diminishing returns. The same effort, over time, will become less and less effective. Believe me, I know it is frustrating as hell at times. I have hit a few plateaus in my weight loss goals. You just have to understand that these things happen in most weight loss plans and keep at it.

If you can't exercise for more than 10 minutes, try HIIT [wikipedia.org]. Basically you do a cardio workout at a high intensity for two intervals and moderate intensity for one interval. One of the example the link shows is to workout at a high intensity for 20 seconds then at a moderate intensity for 10 seconds then repeat a few times. I plan on adding that to my routine as I have slipped a bit over the last three weeks or so.

If you do go that route, I would recommend checking out your local craigslist for a Schwinn Airdyne. They are used in cardiac rehab, are built like tanks and don't require being plugged into electricity. They pop up from time to time for less than $150. I managed to buy three for less than that, resold one for the price I bought it. I still have the other two. Why two? My wife wanted the newer style with the smaller fan (easier for her to step across when getting on and off it) in the bedroom. I exercise on the other one on the back porch if she is still asleep.

I was of that state of mind until I had a mild heart attack. I'd recommend struggling to achieve a healthy weight over that. Big Grin

Have you had your thyroid checked lately?

Stick with it. You just hit a little bit of a wall. When you start a new diet/exercise program wieght falls off pretty quickly. After that you need to make adjustments to keep up the progress.

Have you ever been tested for thyroid disease [about.com]? There could be a medical reason why you gain weight when other people don't.

EDIT: After I posted I saw that Marg already said everything I said. Good advice Marg.

My thyroid hasnt been checked in 7 years, I could check that as well again to see if anything has changed.
I'm not going to fall off my diet, I just sometimes get frustrated to the point of tears. I definitely, if nothing less, feel a lot better since I switched off all the fatty fried foods and butter, bread and soda. I'm sure at the very least, my heart thanks me.

I'll try some of the excersize suggestions and try to squeeze in some additional time to do so on the weekends, up the water intake and try to switch off the lean cuisines a bit (it's just that Im at work for 10 hours a day and that makes it hard to have many lunch options and breakfast options). If all that fails, I guess I'll have to take my butt to the dr and make sure there's nothing else making me gain weight back.
