Crime rate Drops.............Again
More of the curious trend of lowered crime rates, in the middle of a recession, with large increases in unemployment, which we have been told for years was one of the main reasons for crime. It also comes 6 years after the repeal of the federal "assault weapons" ban, years of record gun sales, and after the majority of states enacted concealed carry laws, which mandate that any citizen be issued a permit to carry on request, unless there is cause not to. Are Americans becoming less violent and more honest? Are police departments doing a better job? Did the increase in gun ownership, and in those legally carrying guns, cause some potential criminals to think twice? Did years of mandatory sentencing and 3 strike laws, end up incarcerating many of the small number of criminals that commit a large percentage of crime? Thoughts? I'd like to know the stats on incarceration, but my immediate thought is that the US has so many people in prison that the people not in prison are less likely to commit crimes.
EDIT: I just googled my thesis here and found an interesting article that offers an agreement: http://www.time.com/time/magazine...-1,00.html

Not all prisons are in California........ many states spend far less per prisoner. One can appreciate the fact that many hard core career criminals are being incarcerated today, without supporting 150K and more a year prison guards, (that can retire in their 50's with 90% of their pay plus benefits for the rest of their lives), or 300K-500K a year dentists, doctors, psychologists, etc. But we are incarcerating too many for non violent or drug crimes, (even though some of those are violent or career criminals that were simply caught for, or allowed to plead guilty to lesser crimes). So the system still needs to be tweaked. No violent or career criminal should be let out early because of space requirements, while simple drug users or other lesser criminals are still being held. |

It's quite expensive to lock people up and horrendously expensive to execute them. Here in CA we also spend a massive amount of money on prisoners who are medically incapacitated. Who? Last edited by Grinner; 09-13-2010 at 11:53 AM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

My parents and a neighbor were broken into and some small items stolen (~500-1000 bucks worth). Since it was too small to report to the insurance company and the cops don't really do squat, except to file a report and forget about it, so they did nothing. The joke here is the cops don't really do much except speed traps, dui checkpoints and anything serious traffic accident with injuries or murders. |

Quoted your own post so you can read it again (also emphasized a keyword)
Or having naked photos of your child in the bath, could land you in jail longer then a person who molests a child. |

Your two examples are not that good. I'm sure you know that you're stretching it. Having a picture of your kid in the bathtub isn't going to land you in jail unless there's very extenuating circumstances behind it. Last edited by buyerandseller; 09-13-2010 at 03:44 PM.. |
