My computer won't start. Motherboard shows error code D4

Motherboard: Asrock P55 Extreme
Processor: i7 860
RAM: 4gb ddr3 Corsair
GPU: Radeon 5850
HD: Caviar Black 750GB
Case: Antec 900 two
CPU Fan: Hyper 212+

I managed to mount the Hyper 212+ cpu fan onto my motherboard but now, for some reason, my computer won't turn on. The fans will spin but I can't get to the start up/BIOS page.

On my motherboard, I see the error code "D4". I googled all over and it says that its a problem with my memory settings. My memory settings are all default and I have never tampered with them before. They were working fine before...

Asrock motherboard manuals don't even have a complete list of error codes..

Does anyone know what the problem is and/or how I can fix it?

Try one module at a time?

Does the same thing happen with name brand memory chips?

Reset your BIOS via removing the battery for 15-30minutes, jumping it with a small wire, or pressing a button depending on your mobo.

Build outside the case with only motherboard, cpu, power and beeper. Listen for beeps.
No beeps, probably dead motherboard.
Keep adding components and listen for beeps.

Make sure the back plate of the Hyper 212+ is not contacting the motherboard solder points. It could burn out the motherboard if it comes in touch with solder points.

Ok, now wait. You said you changed your cooler. Are you sure you plugged in the power connector to the correct header on the board? Also, you DID clean off the old thermal paste from the CPU chip and apply new to the new heatsink?

Try re-seating the memory, remember to use the primary slots.

I have an ASROCK P55 Extreme and upon initially installing it I ran into a similar problem where it would just stall with an error on the little lcd on the motherboard. I can't remember what my error was specifically but I took everything out and started from scratch and it ended up working the second time around. I believe I put the memory into the secondary slots the first time around.

I use Corsair XMS memory sticks. They were always working fine. I'm not sure if they're the problem now. I've reseated the memory multiple times with no success. I've tried every permutation already.

However, I have a hard time placing my memory stick into my primary RAM slot. Does this reveal a problem?

and also, I'll try resetting the BIOs by taking off the battery.

if you don't put memory in the 1st primary slot
what trouble are you having to place the memory into the primary ram slot? is it not fitting properly? can you see if there's anything stuck inside the slot?

It fits properly but it takes quite a bit of force to push the memroy stick into the slot. I checked if theres anything stuck in the slot but didn't see any.. unless its some microscopic object causing the problem.

I also reset my BIOs by removing the battery and putting it back after 30 minutes; nothing happened.

RMA the board perhaps

D4 is the error for man-handling a MB.

Were they working fine with the same motherboard, graphics card, and software? Because Corsair memory isn't generally high reliability, and neither pair of DDR2 XMS I had (back when it was $15, AR) would boot the computer, just like the XMS bought by 5 other people at the time.

corsair memory isn't reliable? please show proof of that.

Not to mention i'd be more concerned with the fact OP said he couldn't fit them properly in the main memory slots.

The current generation of intel boards require memory to be in main slots or they won't boot.
