multiple cable modems on Comcast, one line?

mikeyz 1,530 666 September 16, 2010 at 05:10 PM
i switched over my cable modem to a newer one, hooked it up to my computer and it installed, took me to the comcast page to install it.

i wanted to speed test between the 2 modems and i put the old one back, and it didnt need me to install it again, it showed up both modems active.

heres the thing, my friend took the modem to his house, hooked it up, never asked for the setup screen, and its still working, he already has a comcast acct but his modem took a crap. I just find it odd that he didnt have to setup the modem to his accou nt, like when i first connected my new modem.

Does comcast now allow 2 modems on one account?

The cable provider allows/denies any cable modem on their network based on the MAC address of the device. They don't really care WHERE the device is as much as whether it's authorized for access and whether someone is paying for it. So it doesn't surprise me it would work.

My guess would be if you tried this again in a week it wont work. The add process is probably automatic but the delete process probably requires manual approval. Comcast will catch up with this. Either that or they will detect your using 2 modems and possibly bill you. In general this should not work.

thats what i was thinking, main reason i asked is cause i had put the modem for sale on craigslist, if the case that the modem was still active in my account, and the other party did some illegal stuff, that mac address would still be under my name. Not to mention if they download a ton, the bandwith cap would also be in my name. Yea that would suck if they start to bill me since i dont even have the modem anymore.

if you know you won't be using the 'old' modem, CALL comcast and ask them to remove it from your account because you've set up and provisioned a new one. do that BEFORE you meet to sell.

When you buy more, you save more. And when you save more, you can buy more.
