Thank you..
I was thinking of DELETING EVERYTHING FROM THERE (Except what i use) You dont really need anything assigned, you can manually point stuff somewhere each time you load it right? (Athough its nice not having to do that) Last edited by Dude111; 10-12-2010 at 10:10 PM.. |

OpenWithView v1.11
OpenWithView is a small utility that displays the list of all available applications in the 'Open With' dialog-box of Windows, and allows you to easily disable/enable the applications in the list. When application is disabled, it won't be displayed in the 'Other Programs' section of the 'Open With' dialog-box. This utility can be useful if your 'Open With' window displays too much applications, and you want to remove the applications that you don't use frequently. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/open_with_view.html |

I'm hoping that a machine running 98 is not used on the internet. No security.
Get Ccleaner Slim with no toolbar [ccleaner.com] You will still need to uncheck all the extra shortcuts you don't need . . . Be sure to update before running it.
Get Malwarebytes free edition [cnet.com] Be sure to update before running it. Get SuperAntiSpyware free edition (SAS) [cnet.com] Be sure to update before running it. |

To avoid most drive-by problems, a router with NAT and a custom hosts file do wonders. Remember, not everyone has a lot of spare money. Some people need to use things like computers till they physically die. It is what annoys me when I hear about people talking about how stupid it is for X product to still support a certain OS or piece of hardware. In addition to poor first world neighborhoods, you have plenty of computers in the developing world that were donated from the 'obsolete' piles in the first world. -MJ |

I'd hate to attempt to install any software that came out after about 2004 on a Windows 98 system. I guess if user is only using it for email, perhaps could get by with tons of router security -- but still. You spend the money here, or you spend it there. It doesn't make sense to me to spend tons of money on router security when the OS can be upgraded and supported and updated securely. Hardware to get up to at least XP is NOT that high a price and will give the user the ability to use new software. |

As to running a newer browser, I know of KernelEx to extend Win98, but can't vouch for it. http://sourceforge.net/projects/kernelex/ BTW NAT isn't an expensive option or firewall setup, it is just Network Address Translation. It is a method to use one external IP address and route to an internal network. The nice part is, if you don't establish the connection, it is difficult for anyone to get into the network from the outside, as all they can see is the router which has your IP address. I'm also not trying to argue with you, I just have known and still know some people that use antiquated hardware because of financial limitations. I even know people that are still :gasp: on dialup. I have another friend who only uses library computers. -MJ 2011 Wins: Being updated |
