WRT54GX G Router antenna placement... more
Have a WRT54GX G router with three antennas. To optimize distance and signal, does it matter which floor it's located? And is the antenna directional, that is, it has three antennas in a row. Does it matter which direction they face? I'm of the impression it'll work better in the center of the attic, but getting a cable to it would be a real pain. Right now, it's in the basement and I'd like a tad more transmission distance. Thanks! |

A basement is not the best spot. Think of a sphere of radio waves eminating from the router, if you put the router on the main floor and ignore any obstacles, it will reach the furthest distance horizontally at the ground level.
It is important to consider what sort of large appliances or metal ducts, etc might be in between the router and where you need the signal. Putting the router upstairs is a good idea because the signal would come from above with less obstacles in the way to block the signal. Common antennas emit the strongest signal horizontally when the antenna itself is aligned vertically, kind of like this: ( I ) |

center of center of the attic is not good spot, put it next to modem near window away from metal desk or filing cabnit
