This is a new thread in the spirit of it's predecessors:

Googlevoice + Asterisk pbx (PiAF) + Free DID from SipGate = Free incoming/outgoing USA VOIP service

Google Voice + Sipgate + MySipSwitch - Asterisk = Free Inbound/outbound Calling No Server required

This is a new, simpler method using the newly released Asterisk 1.8. Most of the setup is automated by a package called The Incredible PBX by Ward Mundy who has also written a decent tutorial:

5 Steps to Paradise: It’s Incredible PBX for Asterisk 1.8 [nerdvittles.com]

I have tested this extensively and it works as advertised. I am able to make and receive calls using my home phone for free using a Google Voice number. I will be be writing a FAQ in this post and providing support to anyone with questions.

An important note:
You should really configure this with a Gmail/Google Voice account that is seldom used. If you are signed into Gmail using your browser and a phone call comes in, it will ring in your inbox instead of the home phone. To avoid this, register a new gmail account and then go to www.google.com/voice [google.com] and pick a number. Why not...both are free!

Someone else pointed out that if you stay signed out of chat while in your Gmail inbox, then you can use your existing account as it will not accept incoming calls.

FAQ:

1) What do I need?

* A computer to PBX-in-a-Flash, a Linux distribution pre-packaged with Asterisk. This can be a dedicated machine OR a virtual one. I have tested this VMWare Server and VirtualBox (both free!)
* An analog telephone adapter ($30) for using a regular phone OR a free software phone if can sit at your computer to make the calls.

2) This doesn't need Sipgate or Gizmo or another service?

No. The recently released Asterisk 1.8 has support for direct making and receiving calls using Google Voice without any other third party services. All you need to do is provide Asterisk with the user and password for the Gmail account.

3) How do I set this up?

Read Ward Mundy's tutorial:
5 Steps to Paradise: It’s Incredible PBX for Asterisk 1.8 [nerdvittles.com]

4) How do I configure the Linksys PAP2 for use with this PBX?

With the PAP2 at default settings, bring up it's web interface by typing the IP of the device into a web browser.
NOTE: To get the IP of the PAP2, pick up the phone and press * four times. When the man answers with "configuration menu" press 110# and he will read you the IP.

* Click Admin Login on the top right.
* Click Line 1 at the top
* Make sure Line 1 is enabled
* Proxy field should be the LAN ip of your PBX
* Register: Yes
* Display Name, User ID, and Auth ID should all be the asterisk extension you are connecting to. Mine all say 701.
* The password field needs the "secret" from the extension in FreePBX

Does anybody notice a lag after the phone first ring to when the IVR kicks in (the message of please wait while I locate someone to take your call)?
In the freepbx web admin:

Setup > IVR > MainIVR > Change the timeout value to "0"

That sped it up for me at least. You can also change the announcement to "none" to get rid of the voice.

I am having a problem myself though, I am never getting it to ring my actual phone. It's plugged in to my Linksys SPA-2100, and outbound is working fine. I had it working with the same settings using a dedicated computer, but in an effort to consolidate I am trying to get it working through VMware. The call does go to voicemail, so that seems indicate it's not a network problem because it is going through.

When I call, it will ring, and then after a few seconds the ring will go kinda crazy and stop having the gap in between the tones (riiiiiing..pause..riiiiiiiiing). The pause is about 1/4 second. Here's the log output, if anyone has any suggestions i'd really appreciate it:

The only thing that seems like an error is the "NOTICE[7099] app_dial.c: Not accepting call completion offers from call-forward recipient SIP/192.168.1.122-000000c1". Google turned up nothing helpful.

I just tested last night...it works.
Solved my own problem - I have an PAPNA adapter and it was using its own codes. I had to disable them to get it to work.

Is anyone else having issues?

Mine stopped working all of a sudden.

That is actually not the lag that I am experiencing. I purposely turned on the IVR to see if the lag is actually because of the IVR. This is not the case.

The lag that I mentioned is actually like the following:

Phone 1 calls this number. After the first ring, there is a long lag (5-7 seconds) then the IVR, then another regular rings.

Without the IVR, I get the following:

Phone 1 calls this number. After the first ring, there is a long lag (5-7 seconds) then another regular rings.

Strangely, if I were to use my skype, I do not experience the lag at all. Its only happening from my cell, my office's landline, or even gmail's google voice...

It is nice but it requires a computer to run all the time. I personally use the 2nd method listed in the wiki.

GV+sipgate(or Gizmo5)+Sipswitch+PAP2 (directly hooked to a router)+Pany phone with multiple handsets

bingo you have a phone system working without your local computer running, it dials just like a land phone. Of course, the remote server (sipswitch) runs 24/7 for you as the server. The disadvantage, your phone system will be down if sipswitch is down. However, sipswitch has been extremely reliable in the past 10 months or so.

kru5ty_ru5ty: Google's Gtalk transport requires users to press a key or press 1 to confirm an incoming chat session or phone call. The delay should be the time it takes Incredible PBX to press the 1 for you and then pass the call to your chosen in-house destination. But it shouldn't be over about 1-2 seconds. Sounds more like a routing problem. Try adding stunaddr=stun01.sipphone.com in the [general] section of /etc/asterisk/gtalk.conf. Then: amportal restart.

This line does not seem to improve but actually make it worse... It was as long as 12-20 seconds now... At the moment I commented that line to bring it back to 5-7 seconds..

Any other suggestions?

Try adding these settings to your ATA:
http://michigantelephone.workbench.net/
All the way to the bottom and then up about three sections you'll see "Additional hints for emulating "real" telephone service (Linksys and Sipura adapters only)"

Also, did you open up the UDP port 5222 to the IP address of your VM's network? I made my VM network address static and then mapped port 5222 to forward to it.

Thanks for the link, i'll mess with the settings. I do have my 522 port forwarded to the VMware static IP in my router. The connection is bridged and I don't have a network adapted listed for VMware.

One thing I have noticed is that my VMware IP isn't even showing up in my router. I'm at a loss to where the problem is though, because I am getting transferred to the voicemail. That should mean everything is forwarded right?

VM IP address is actually not shown up in your router. If you have all required ports forwarded to that IP, you should be ok. I myself set a static IP for the VM.

My router showed a host name of "pbx" in the dhcp list. I took that mac address and created a static IP for it then forwarded port 5222 to that IP address. If you have DD-WRT on your router then I can tell you exactly how to do it.

You'll also find this handy utility on your Incredible PBX: /root/nv/ipscan

It will tell you the IP address, MAC address, and (usually) the name of every device currently being used on your LAN.
