What is the best video format to watch movies from an external hard drive on PS3?
I have a lot of dvd's that I would like to backup to my external hard drive. I'm not sure what the best format to use is. Which format will give the best quality. I am using Winx dvd ripper to backup my dvd's.

Streaming your movies from a PC gives greater flexibility for containers and codecs, so go that route if possible Stick with MPEG-4 h.264 to keep the file size under 4gigs if you still want/need to use an external drive. Handbrake does a great job for this http://handbrake.fr/

There is a setting for MPEG - 4 and h.264. Which is the better one to go with. If I am going to stream what format would you use?

if the PS3 is on your network, you can stream almost any format to the PS3 from any networked computer using ps3mediaserver. http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/. this allows you to keep your video in one desirable format.
it transcodes video in real time to something the PS3 recognizes natively so it needs a reasonable computer although DVD rips probably won't require much CPU at all. GO DUKE!

Is the ps3 media server a stand alone program or is that the same thing as the windows sharing program on the ps3. I can see all my mp3's and videos from my computer on my ps3. I really know very little about this stuff.

PS3 media server would replace using windows media player.. This program rocks, it takes your video/audio file and transcodes it (if necessary) to something the PS3 can play. All of this is done on the fly and is the best way for watching videos.
To your earlier post MP4 is the container while h.264 is the video codec. |

Ps3 media server can access literally EVERY file on your computer, you could rip the dvd to the computer and just find where your ripped it and play it from there, and it doesn't matter what format its in because there are codecs in the media server.

Media server is awesome....
Op you do know you need another program to crack the encryption on the disk... Their are one click programs that do everything for you like anydvd and others...doom9 has some writeups and reviews...I'm sure life hacker will have some easy to understand guides also.. |

Crack the encryption on what disk? Are you talking about dvd's? Winx rips without any trouble.
