Yea but people like me forget about these things til someone posts about it. And so now I am buying my son one while I am reminded because it is a cheap gift he will like and use..everyday.

Some models of the receiver have an internal antenna and some use a little external one. You'll need those if you're going to use RF mode. For IR mode, you dont. Check the back of your box and if theres a connector just like the ones they use for cable or satellite wires to screw on (an RF connector) then you need one.

By the way, if you have an old unused tv antenna with an RF connector cable on it, you can use that instead of the little stick antenna directv gives you. It'll increase your RF range and accuracy substantially. A length of speaker wire screwed to an RF converter plug will also give you better results, and you can run that up the back of the cabinet the receiver is in where it'll be out of the way.

Hmm, what is RF mode? I don't think we use that. Last time I heard of that was years ago hooking up a game system of some sort. I could be wrong though. We have the newest Dtv HD boxes, so I wouldn't think we'd need the antenna, but I'll check it out... on Christmas Day when I give the remote to my son lol. I'll let him figure it out. I think he should just be able to use is as is though. I would hope so anyway.

When you go into the remote control setup, there is an option for IR/RF mode. IR mode sends an infrared light blink to an 'eye' on the front of the receiver, and depends on line-of-sight. RF mode uses radio frequency, and works over longer distances and without a need for line of sight. The receiver can be behind a wood door or in the next room.

Some older directv remotes dont have RF capabilities. Most receivers do. I dont know if theres much correlation between age of the receiver and whether it has an external antenna jack. The external antennas work better than the internal ones, regardless.

Does anyone know whether the HR21-700 HD DVR supports RF mode?
