If so, do you recommend it? why?

I'm trying to get an suv before winter starts but i'm unsure of what to get. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

TIA

What does that have to do with traction?

Smaller SUV = less mass = less traction. Bigger (taller) SUV = more unstable in high winds.

Pick your poison.

We have a Santa Fe (love it) - if you want more compact I'd recommend checking out an AWD Tucson.
Hyundai is still the best bargain out there.

That may be true for dry roads, but on ice, the size of the SUV would be largely irrelevant. It would have more to do with the types of tires, the thread on the tires, and the traction control/stability control of the vehicle.

You really think so?? I mean... unless we're talking about the difference between off road vs year round tires, I don't see where tire type is going to make that much of a difference.

I don't know about SUV's but around here, when there is any ice on the roads, all the pickup trucks end up in the ditches.

They make summer tires = poor traction on snow/ice
All season tires = moderate traction on snow/ice
Winter tires/snow tires = great traction on snow/ice

Don't ask me what the difference (besides price laugh out loud) is between the tires, but I'm sure your google isn't busted Wink.

And they make special tires, I haven't seen them in the US (or they may not be street legal). They have little spikes for controlled driving on ice.

Tires play a major role in the traction of your car or SUV on ice.
