Deal Details

I am an existing customer since 2009. I'm trying to save money these days (like everyone else), so I called Directv today attempting to trim my bill.

When the automated system kicked in, I said "cancel service." As is common with Directv, I was transferred to someone in retentions. I told the nice lady that I wanted to inquire about cancelling my service. "Why sir?" she asked.

I told her that Dishnetwork was offering a similar package for $30 less a month. I told them that I liked Directv service, but I wanted to save money given the economy, etc. etc.

She said one moment, looked through my account, and upon not finding any current promotions attached to my account, offered a $150 credit. I took it!

Important note: I'm already within a contract for at least another 6 months. The agent never even alluded to cancellation fees. And I did NOT have to extend my contract by accepting this credit.

Last year out of the blue I got a postcard in the mail from DirecTv saying that they were giving me Mega March madness for free. I have never subscribed to Mega March Madness and I haven't had the college basketball package in three years - since I discovered I can get 90% of the games on the sports pack. The little touches like that are why I have stayed with them for the last 6 years.

getting the $10 credit for 12 months sucks imo. Dish is giving it lifetime. My contract is up, time to play hardball I guess...

i love you guys!

took 33 minutes on the phone. i had to go thru the DirecTV retention department as i threatened to cancel and switch to Comcast XFinity.

they told me the Choice Extra HD package i have now is obsolete and they don't offer it and can't discount it. tired to sell me a cheaper pkg with less channels. (no go as some critical kids channels were no in the package.)

they told me i'm maxed out on RECURRING DISCOUNTS since i jumped on that free HD for 2 years at $10 per month (that you guys posted about this summer) which = $240. they said $240 is the most they can give any customer for recurring discounts on any account.

so i said well if you can't do anything i guess i'm going to Comcast. let me know if i have any cancellation fees.....

then i got - "well sir, what i can offer you is a one time $225 credit" woot

they said that will be straight off the top, displayed as a single credit.
so that means the next couple of months of DirecTV are FREE.

Confirmation: DIRECTV® Service Credit

Acct # XXXXXXXX

This email confirms that a credit of $225.00 has been applied to your DIRECTV account.

(fwiw - i'm on my 3rd year, month to month contract and have all that paperless stuff set-up. i have 3 receivers, only 1 is HD)

I made the call yesterday and got $200 bucks. I got the same story about how the 10/mo for 24 months cannot be paired with any other recurring discounts. I didn't even really ask for anything I just said I was thinking about switching and wondering what they could offer. I didn't have to extend my contract so I get the next 4 months free!

ditto for me. took about 10 minutes. Went to retentions, said cost was a issue and dish is cheaper. Immediately got an account credit $20/mo for 12 months plus 3 months free of Showtime. Dexter on demand, here I come!!

No contact extension, rep was very nice and it was painless.

Similar here. Took about 15 minutes. Just called a few days ago after being inspired by the OP. Had received DISH flier in the mail. Saved it for reference. Told Rep couldn't justify paying $20-30 more per month based on the flier and asked if there was anything she could do to help me. She said she was obligated to tell me that if I canceled I'd have to pay ETF, then went on to offer the $10/month for 12 months on the XTRA package and $10/month free HD for 12 months ($240 total for one year).

Showed up on my bill as:
CHOICE XTRA - $10/12moBasePkg -- ($10.00) ($0.60)
HD Access - 12moFreeHDExist -- ($10.00) ($0.60)

Hope others can cash in, as well.

Last time we called Retention, we got the old Tivo based DVR's one HD and one SD (On the Tivo Forums). We've had them come out to check out some signal problems with the HD DVR, who what that was about, I have SD at my end of the house. Anyway, I was thinking about cajoling the old man to call them and get at least some discounts. We still have one SD DVR (a newer model), but its connected to a LCD TV and I think its time we sent it an HD signal.

So its been confirmed they are only doing HR24's? Those things are pretty nice, works with PlayOn and TVersity (1.8) which give you access to a ton of online content, not to mention your files on your PC.

I will let you guys know the results cause as I said I have to do some cajoling...

I have been looking into PlayON and TVersity to stream Hulu to my TV. So you have tried it before?

Called today concerned about my bill. Received free HD ($10) and a $10 credit for next 12 months. I'll take $240 dollars in savings for the next 12 months for 10 minutes on the phone. I just went out of contract.

I also got $200 one time and starz & showtime for 6 months. They also told me the HD credit for 24 months and that's why they can't do any monthly credit.

I think I finaggled another $15/mo for a year, except I just don't trust them. I still can't see my account activity for the last few weeks, I'll have to wait for Qwest bundle bill to verify. I called retention to mention I only saw one $10 referral credit over the last few months on my paper bill. I confirmed with him that I was now getting another $15/mo (for a year) on top of my current $10/mo discount so my bill be under $60. In other words I hope I'm getting $25/mo off as promised. I'm still on my free Starz and Showtime deal. I like Directv but you really have to watch them like a hawk
