Building new comp - How big of ssd, gpu vs cpu
So I'm building a new computer with a budget of 1000 and I already have a 200 dollar sound card I got for creative and old dvd drives, not sure if I should replace them, they're like 8x read or something.I'm a Video editor and I work with Sony Vegas, After Effects, and Adobe Premiere and looking forward into making music sooner or later and I'm a gamer as well. Here are some questions I would like to ask. 1) Should I wait for SSDs to go down, I've been waiting a year and no BF deals for SSDs, I just need a fast boot drive and can fit all my adobe programs, some games like starcraft, black ops, ddo and sony vegas. At the moment my computer has 60 gbs worth of program files, but half of them are probably things I don't use. 2)The size of AppData is HUGE, is there a way to make it go to secondary hard drive, I don't want to waste 20 gbs of files on my SSD just for that. 3)I'm getting 6 gbs of ram [newegg.com] for 99.99 after mir. Is there a huge difference between dual channel and triple channel memory? EDIT - I got 8 gbs of ram for 99 dollars no mir. 4 x 2 gb sticks. 4)I'm not sure if I should get the Core i7 870 [microcenter.com] for 229.99 at microcenter. I'm not sure if I should wait for the price to go down, wait for i9 to come out, or get an i5 instead. (I'm going to overclock the cpu I get) 5) I want to at least run starcraft 2 on medium settings on 1080p at 30 fps, How cheap is a graphic card that can handle that, and should I drop the i7 and go for an i5 to get a better gpu? Can I run starcraft 2 in 1080p max settings smoothly with ati raedon 5770? 6) Should I get TRIM for my SSD? 7)Should I install games on the SSD? (Only Starcraft 2, DDO, Warcraft 3 and League of Legends) 8)Are there any cheap internal Hard Drives with 64 mb cache and 7200 rpm, I need about two of those. 9)Should I spend the extra 80 bucks to get the Intel i7 900 series? 10)Any good heatsink for the cpu for overclocking? 11)What are good monitors, I would like to go dual/triple screens and would like them to be 1080p lcd (or led). I need to find cheap ones, maybe the deal on asus on newegg, I already have a 23" 1680x1200 or something monitor and I'm not sure if I should use that if I ever use eyefinity for games. Here is what I might consider getting so far, the ram and the cpu above, the Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case [newegg.com] for 59.99 after mir. ssd won;t be good for video/music editing. the constant read/write will bog the drive down. if you get an ssd make sure to get another drive as your scratch disk and then another for storage. that would be my suggestion. otherwise amazon has the velociraptor 150g for 80 right now.
single to dual and dual to triple you gain at most 5%. so no its not important. i have a 8800 gts (9th tier http://www.tomshardware.com/revie...761-7.html ) and have no issues with sc on med settings at 1920x1200 |

1)I dont agree with Dayv that it wont be good for video editing because they will bog down. SSD's have quite a bit more through put and no moving parts to wait for the letancy of rotating media. They should be better for this reason, but you dont want to use it for storage or your scratch disk as they will wear out alot faster. Velociraptors are over rated and still really expensive. Go with a WD Cav Black if you dont go with an SSD drive which will be tough for your budget.
3 and 4) If your a video editor you are going to want more than 6gb of ram. I would go with 9 minimum. The i7 870 does not support tripel channel as its a P55 chipset. It also only has one PCI-E full speed lain, so not good for multiple video cards if yo uever go with this route. Good article here http://www.tomshardware.com/forum...ta3-16lane but remember that it is from Feb or 2010 so prices are not accurate and the market has changed a bit. You will also not beable to upgrade this to a hex core processor if you ever want to as those all are 1366. You should be fine with an i7 but I would probably recommend going to a i7 9 series as you are then 1366 and better able to upgrade in the future if you want. I would not wait for an i9 as they are far off and will be really expensive. Since your overclocking a good i7 9xx will be plenty fast. 6) Yes you want trim on an SSD that supports it 7) Only if you have space, you will notice a faster load time but not more frames. 5 and 8) Confused here as your wants are different for the same game. Since you do video work in adobe products consider an NVidia card that supports the mercury playback engine. THis will be huge to you in Premier assuming you have CS5. I have the 5770, but dont game that much and it seems to work fine on max or near max settings at 1980x1050 on the games I have (Dirt2, Just Cause 2 (I turn it down a little here) Dont forget a quality PSU for this system especially since your Overclocking, as well as proper cooling. For your budget your gonna have a hard time getting an SSD and all this other stuff. |

I'm getting the i7 8 series because its about 80 dollars less than the 9 series. For 5 and 8 I was going to merge the question together. And for the ram, I'm fine with 6 gb, I'll upgrade when I have to. For the graphics card, I don't really care if it has gpu acceleration for video editing, just something good for games and cheap. And I can fit the SSD in my budget, I still have about 100 dollars left to spare on the psu and cooling (and there is about like 150 rebate). |

Should help. Note its not exactly straightforward unfortunately given how M$ decided the Users directory should behave and programs throw all kinds of crud into AppData. |
