Slickdeals reply form causes laptop to heat up (Firefox 4 Beta)
No joke. Preface: I'm using the latest version of Firefox 4 beta.I noticed that as soon as I opened up a reply or post page on Slickdeals, my laptop started to get quite warm. I opened up task manager and discovered that as long as the reply box is in view, Firefox consumes between 20 and 50% CPU usage. This results in my CPU heating up to 80 C. Note: I've already ruled out my computer configuration. There's nothing wrong with any of my computers and this happens on all of them. I'm not sure if this happens with the current regular version of Firefox. I'm also not really sure if this is Slickdeals' problem (Javascript maybe?), but I thought I'd make someone aware of it. It may be a Firefox bug, in which case Slickdeals themselves filing a bug report with Mozilla would carry more weight than if I did. Last edited by redmaxx; 12-04-2010 at 01:38 AM.. Steve Gibson on password policies [grc.com]: I mean, I don't get this change it every eight weeks. ... It's not as if passwords are traveling by camel after they've been stolen, going to the bad guys, and so there's, like, some weird eight-week window, like, oh, we're going to change your password so that the stale password no longer works. ... And all this does is make IT people despised because users, who are not dumb, they think, why am I - why do I have to do this? What problem is this solving?

OS is always Windows 7 with all patches applied. Running Security essentials on some, Symantec Antivirus on another. RAM varies between 2 and 4 GBs of DDR2 800. Processor is one of: Core 2 Duo T7700, Core 2 Quad Q9505 and Core i5 520M HDD is either an HTS722010K9SA00 or a 7200 RPM laptop drive (don't have the manufacturer handy) or a 7200 RPM desktop hard drive (don't have the manufacturer handy) Flash version is 10.1 r102 Graphics range from an nVidia Quadro FX 570M, Quadro NVS 3100M or an ATI Radeon 5770. Doesn't matter if I have any Firefox extensions installed or not. This happens even with a fresh install of Firefox. But like I said, I don't know if this is new to Firefox 4 or not. But since 4 is still in beta, now is as good a time as any to report a bug, if it is a Firefox bug. The specific machines involved are a Thinkpad T61p, Dell Latitude E6410 and I also noticed it on my self-built desktop (I just don't care as much since it's a quad-core and it's not sitting right on my lap. )

Just installed a stock copy of Firefox 4 Beta 7, loaded up
http://slickdeals.net/forums/newt...thread&f and http://slickdeals.net/forums/newr...p=350147 No performance changes in basic editing mode. In WYSIWYG editing mode, i get a 10% cpu usage in one core sustained as reported. No performance impact in any stable releases of Chrome, Firefox, Safari or IE. Since this is attributed to FF4, the best we can do is mark it as reproducible and we'll see about submitting a bug report. I dont think that we carry any extra weight than anyone else submitting a bug though
The personal views and opinions expressed in this post are exactly that and do not necessarily represent an official opinion or stance of Slickdeals and this is a disclaimer in case I say something stupid. In fact, anything I say should not be taken seriously.

I figured out the exact cause. If I shrink the window so that the Smilies don't show up, the usage drops to 0-8%. As soon as I scroll the Smilies into view, bam, usage shoots up.
Thanks for looking into it! Last edited by redmaxx; 12-04-2010 at 01:37 AM.. |
