Amazon selling fake cologne/perfume?

Thread Details

Ok, I'm not saying one way or the other, but it seems like a lot of users who purchase cologne/perfume on Amazon are reporting them to be fakes/counterfeits. I find it hard to believe that Amazon would do this, but I also find it hard to believe that so many people would say this on NUMEROUS different brand frangrances.

Their prices definitely beat the department stores, but I don't want to buy stuff that is not the real deal.

Anyone have any experiences?

Maybe the items are being sold by a third party rather than Amazon themselves

No, these are the ones from Amazon not third party sellers.

How do you know this? People specifically note it in their review?

Yea that's what I am thinking, Amazon would not sell fake perfume/colognes, they never sell fake stuff. I am 99% sure, that most of the reviews for fakes and such are for 3rd party sellers.

Just by reading some of the reviews. Look at any of the one star reviews on any popular fragrance. They all tell horror stories of it not smelling right, having the wrong packaging, etc.

I find it hard to believe...but it also makes me wary to buy.

not smelling right and wrong packaging isnt what u should be afraid of. what u should be afraid of is if it causes skin rash.

Amazon seems to use drop shippers for the cologne they offer directly (the giveaway is they arrive not in Amazon Logo'd boxed). I have yet to have a problem, but others have, particularly with the top 10 fragrances like Armani Code, Acqua di Gio, etc.

Most of these fragrances are GREY MARKET sourced, so they may be acquired older stock from department stores, bought from huge wholesale clearing houses, slightly damaged corners on packages, etc. Some houses like Chanel are notorious for suing anyone selling their products below MSRP, and will go after the grey market suppliers, so there are stories of the date codes and batch/serials being cut off.

You should be safe buying within the A-Z Guarantee, even though fragrances are non-returnable. Just complain, and if the first CSR doesn't resolve it escalate.

I purchase most of my fragrances though Amazon, and everything has been smooth though them directly and various Merchants in the marketplace. (I purchased around 10 different bottles within the last couple years)

The tough thing about buying fragrance thru the mail is that the courier can be responsible for degrading the fragrance due to temperature swings, items sitting in the heat on a dock or in rail cars, etc. Anyone who has left a bottle of fragrance in the car by accident, can attest to the damage done from a short time.
