Did anyone else's Arial font get messed up in Windows 7?

Mavtech 26,866 3,310 December 9, 2010 at 06:51 AM
When I got in this morning, the fonts in Firefox were all bold. In IE, they were all italics. We had 3 computers that did this today. All Windows 7 x64. Here's the fix in case someone else has this happen:

In the Run box, type "c:\Windows\Fonts\Arial.ttf" and hit enter.

Click Install.

That's it.

all tech support threads will now be answered with possibly random and false information.
This is due to the retardedness of posters and answering posters in general.
thank you, have a nice day.

Ok. It just happened again but on an XP system. I was thinking it was isolated to images I deployed with SCCM. But, it happened on my laptop which was not deployed with SCCM.

No. With XP, I had to expand the Arial.tt_ to the C:\Windows\Fonts folder from an XP install disk.

cd to the i386 folder on the disk. Type the following command and hit enter:

expand arial.tt_ C:\Windows\Fonts\Arial.ttf

Thank you very much!

I'll report back if I get any users that were affected.

Did you figure out what caused it?

Steve Gibson on password policies [grc.com]: I mean, I don't get this change it every eight weeks. ... It's not as if passwords are traveling by camel after they've been stolen, going to the bad guys, and so there's, like, some weird eight-week window, like, oh, we're going to change your password so that the stale password no longer works. ... And all this does is make IT people despised because users, who are not dumb, they think, why am I - why do I have to do this? What problem is this solving?

I'm still investigating what caused it. Possibly a Windows update? But, if that were true, it would be more widespread. So, I'm looking into something that's installed on our image. It could be Dell's Latitude On 2.1.

Plus, were there any updates last night? Patch Tuesday isn't until next week.

There were a few Office updates synced to WSUS over the past couple days. But, that's about it.

I mostly use 2007, but I do have 2010 at work. However my work machine is 32-bit, so that's not a good comparison.
