Here is my thoughts on the TLC show--this is a post I copied from my NON-coupon--NO DEALS blog.

"UGH. NOT good at all. I have been couponing YEARS before this had become a fad/popular thing to do. It is already getting hard enough–I see no need to broadcast this info across the whole nation. The owners of all these couponing blogs/websites always want to broadcast and get as many people as they can to sign up on their blog. I had a coupon friend online and I told her how I think all this “recruiting” will bring extreme couponing to a screeching halt eventually. The difference between when I started couponing to now is already vastly different. Stores have put policies into place making it more difficult for couponers. For the first time ever since couponing P&G has new wording on their coupons “limit 4 like coupons per customer.” It just really blows because there the more people that get into couponing, the more fraud there is too. I have seen blatant examples of blog owners actually tellling people how to de-code the bar codes so they can get around purchasing what the coupon says to purchase. Our grocery stores head cashier told us about this lady who photocopied a coupon and she made a whole stack of them. At RA they posted that only 5/25 coupon is allowed per customer per month because someone supposedly tampered with their coupon. I could give many more examples. And, not too sound like a bitch but all these newbies that have crawled out of the woodwork—they just make more work for me. Yes, I was a newbie once too–BUT, I took it upon myself to READ the threads, and learn the store policies etc etc. It seems all these dumb newbies want everything spoon fed to them–thinking for themselves I guess is too much to ask. They ask the SAME questions over and over and OVER again–the answers are there—they just need to READ.

I’m sure the blog/website owners and those profiting from broadcasting about extreme couponing are happy to have more money coming in. Some already make huge bucks—enough to constantly offer crazy giveaways. But I feel like they are cutting off their nose despite their face. I just don’t think it is very smart to go and advertise about what used to be a secret underground world of extreme couponing. Yep, as you can see–I’m NOT happy about this TLC show."

On top of all this recruiting--I also think couponing will come to an end as we know it because everything is going digital. I found out the Detroit free press has decided NOT to carry red plum inserts anymore outside their tri county delivery area. When I called red plum and the DFP, I was told they want customers to start printing their own coupons instead of getting inserts.

TLC's new couponing GAME SHOW features people trying to get the most products for the littlest amount of money. It is not a couponing-instruction show.

Just remember what ever precedent is set by this show goes out the window with one new coupon policy put in place by your store. The Southeast region for Kroger is already seeing some store coupon policies changed to limit of 2 like coupons over night. I was told this by Kroger Corporate under the discretion of the District Manger's due to "shelf clearing" happening in their stores.

I think at this point, the show's novelty has run off (or is running off). I think the only thing they can do now is maybe the anti-coupon extreme show--someone who is too obsessed with couponing and needs to stop (ie:hoarder or someone who buys an extreme amount of items they don't need cause free etc . . . ) they can even focus on one of those people who were stealing qs and how the family wants them to stop. Now that might be interesting.

I suppose he just plays dumb and "had no idea they were counterfeit", which probably is the reason why no one seems to prosecute.
ignorance is never a viable defense. plus, i'm sure most courts would rule that those with "expertise" in coupons should've known better. laugh out loud

But, I have a feeling if I walked into Walmart, filled a shopping cart and paid for it with 200 counterfeit $10 bills, even if I declared "I had no idea", you better believe the cops are going to give me the third degree.

Just seems like the paper trail would be extremely easy to trace for these counterfeits using IP addresses. The kid knows who he bought them from, eBay knows that persons IP address etc., etc.

It's sad that this is going to continue as long as there are no repercussions.
I am just catching up and read Jill's site.. I can NOT believe someone would pass that many Tide coupons.. and if they don't have the hologram, then they were copied, right? How could anyone be so stupid as to pull a stunt like that.. much less have a camera crew film it and broadcast it worldwide?

The show has had bad enough effects on our couponing ways; add into the mix - idiots like "Chris" and Jail'me using fake coupons and/or using coupons on the wrong items on national TV no less.....and it is just ruins things 10-fold.

Anyway, I think P&G got enough complaints about Jailme and weren't prepared to deal with it all.. It wouldn't surprise me if P&G will take this opportunity to use someone "high profile" (at least in the couponing world -that watching that garbage show and know how to spot the fakes) --- and make an example out of them.

If I was that dude - I'd be shaking in my boots any time my door bell rang.. This is their chance to catch someone who --allegedly -- has used fraudulent coupons and had it documented on tape.... They won't need much more evidence than the tapes from the show to prove the coupon fraud.

I hope they go after that person hard core.. People like that ruin deals for the rest of us and enough is enough.. That store likely had to eat a HUGE loss on that transaction... it isn't fair to the store owner, P&G or other customers/couponers...

I agree with you that they should make an example out of somebody, and shuri is right that ignorance of the law is no excuse. But I would rather they (TLC and the so called couponers) publicly answer and be forced to tell the viewers exactly what took place. That would both put an end to the heatwave of q-wanna-bees and hopefully the show. Bottom line is the show and its contestents are frauds. I don't care if they go to jail for it or not I just don't want the rest of the world thinking that is how q'ing really works or lumping us all in together.

I am beginning to think that after we cause an uproar with Jaime, that TLC like the drama and ratings , went in cohoots with mfr and stores, to allow fraud.counterfeit, etc for taping only

I truly believe that the mfr and stores are full aware and its all set up with stores having full knowledge of exactly what is fake, fraud and abuse, but allow it for taping.

I posted my theory a week ago(or so) on the wags chat thread about why mfr and stores are not going to do anything. I dont think that P&G is going to do anything except reduce coupon value and raise product prices

Due to confidentiality clauses in contracts we will never get the truth from the stores or the "cast".

What is sad is that the people who watch the show believe it to be gospel and think they can go and replicate the deals or teach how to replicate what they saw on TV

Think about how many of us, along with Jill, contacted law enforcement, Target, many stores, manufacturers, mainstream media, etc.

We hounded everybody and anybody regarding JK's exploits.

It's as if TLC has a chokehold and will not allow negative press from mainstream media

Anone we have put thu the ringer is saying they had permission from the store.

Stores are playing ignorant until we spell out the error of their ways. The stores go an change their policies once we bring to light how the episode will negatively impact them.

Its all a huge publicity stunt with store and manufacturer knowledge and permission. TLC gets ratings, the stores get publicity and sales.

We are the losers and we are the ones who will get punished and penalized with new rules, reduced coupon values, and higher prices.

Shuri is absolutely correct that ignorance is no excuse for breaking the law. And for good reason; everyone would claim ignorance any time they were busted for doing something wrong. So that fellow does have something to worry about, if P&G decides to pursue this..

It would be nice of TLC gave full disclosure at the beginning and end of each episode - so others don't think this is legit and okay to do... but that's not in their best interest to do so; with viewers OR legally.. Since they're not actively committing fraud by taping this -- (even if they're clearly enabling and encouraging it) -- they're not committing crimes when fraudulent coupons are used.. but if they admit that they KNEW, then they become part of a something that could be categorized as a "conspiracy" to commit fraud, etc...

So there's no way they'll ever admit to it.. Plus, they want to chop/edit this show and sew it up in a drama-filled show and try to pass it off as if it is a reality... and that wouldn't work if they admitted that (store) rules are being bypassed and participants are using fake coupons in order to pile on as much drama as possible..

I will have to read up later in the chat thread.. By the time I started reading this yesterday - I noticed posts had been deleted and so I am left to sort of read through the remnants... and some of it is a little disjointed for me - coming in after the fact.. I will check out your post in the chat thread later on when I have more time..

So maybe I am wrong, but I just can NOT believe that a company like P&G --who seem to be one of the most proactive companies against coupon fraud -- would knowingly be in cahoots with this show.. Viewers could see the coupons did not have the hologram and were obvious copies.. if P&G was involved, why would they give photocopied coupons and not the originals?

I dunno.. I will have to read more tomorrow - when I have more time.. Maybe you're right, but I am not sure I buy it..

Whatever the case, the participant knows whether what he did was legit or not.. and if he used copied coupons w/o P&G's permission, then I would be a little worried.. I have always assumed that after the Jailme incident - steps were being made behind the scenes at P&G and with their legal team .. to go after future fraudsters.. and like I said, this is like handing them a gift with a bow on it.. Their perfect opportunity to make a big statement - on a big level... and with hardly any work on their end..since it is all on tape!

I dont think P&G would be that concerned as they do not reimburse fraudulent coupons, it is the store that loses the money and they are wanting the free advertizement that the stupid show brings.
