I'm not sure if this is the spot to post this, but I need a little tech/shopping advice. We are looking to get a new desktop tower for the mother-in-law for Christmas. She already has a nice monitor, her computer is just getting old and screwy. She uses it mostly for internet browsing, and for her digital pictures.
This is what I found so far. They are all $300. The staples on is winning because I could easily go pick that up down the street and know that I would have it in time for xmas.
Compaq w/ AMD Athlon II 170u Processor
-500 GB HD
-Windows 7 Home Premium
Dell Vostro 230 Mini Tower Desktop
Dell Celeron® Processor 450 (2.20GHz, 800FSB)
-1GB Single Channel DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz - 1DIMM
-250GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache
-Windows Vista® Home Basic, 32bit Service Pack 2
emachines AMD Sempron 145 processor
-500GB hard drive
-Multi-in-1 card reader, 9 USB ports
-Windows 7 Home Premium
If anyone knows about any others or coupons that would make the deal sweeter I'd love it.
Also, if anyone knows of any cheap/good photo editing software I'd appreciate the info.
I would definitely go with the Compaq from Staples because it has the most RAM. For what she's going to use it for the RAM will pretty much be the sole difference in how fast it performs. Now if you liked some features on one of the other 2 computers you listed then you could always add more RAM down the road.
$350 + tax, shipped free (2nd day air) for christmas. it's a 'fasttrack' or 'shipsfast' or whatever they call it now system. ships same or next day. (be sure to select the correct shipping option at checkout)

the athlon dual core 240 is way faster than any of the three processors listed in OP.

When you buy more, you save more. And when you save more, you can buy more.
And when you buy more, you save more. It all starts when you BUY MORE.
I'm not sure of the specs. They live a couple hours away so I can't just go take a look. But when they get a new one, I will see if I can do anything with the old one. I didn't get to the Staples computer when it was on sale so maybe I will go with the Walmart one.
Ugh, maybe I'll get the Dell. Anyone know of any codes to make it a better deal?

I ended up going with the Walmart one. Just getting to the point where you just want to FINISH christmas shopping! But looks good for the limited uses that it will be needed for.
Thanks for all your help everyone!
