I am subspecialized (body imaging). Of the 9 fellows last year, 8 of us got jobs, and the one who didn't continued on as a fellow for a second year. (He also had severe geographical constraints beyond this scope.)
Not all of these jobs were in prime locations, mind you--I consider myself quite lucky. It helps that I'm in academics and have been moderately prolific already, halfway to my promotion publication target, basically.
It's not bad for academics, or for private practice pre-partner positions. I agree that the golden days are over, but I'll be able to accomplish all of my (reasonable) financial goals. That plus an agreeable, stable work environment == win.
